CompTIA To Release New A+ Exams Nov. 26

9/10/2003 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) announced today that it will be releasing the 2003 versions of its A+ exams on Nov. 26.

When live, these exams will instantly replace the versions to be released Friday, which are based on the 2001 objectives but contain unscored beta items covering 2003 objective topics. CompTIA has previously described the new objectives as a "minor update" to the 2001 set.

The exams will continue to be in linear format. CompTIA announced last month that it has dropped adaptive format permanently so that it can continually test beta items both for upgrades and to refresh the question pool.

CompTIA's A+ certification is made up of two exams: Core Hardware and OS. It is a vendor-neutral title designed for computer repair technicians. Once earned, the credential is good for life -- there is no need to upgrade.

Candidates who pass one 2001 exam will be allowed to mix-and-match with the 2003 exams to earn the title, the organization said.

10/31/03: Anonymous says: I once worked worked (and still work) with companies that once considered college degrees to be all that an employee would need. Once companies started investing in computers and software, specialization become a big issue. That's where certification comes in. In order to understand the value of a certifcation that you're studying for, you have to understand the history behind the need for them. Don't believe me, take a look at how auto factories evolved in automation. For those of you who are holding a great many certs and are very bitter, my heart is with you.
10/31/03: Anonymous says: ...and by the way, for anyone who reads the responses from 10/31/03 and begins to start ranting and raving, without thinking, then maybe you're not ready for the work force because the work force sure isn't ready for you. It all starts with your attitude, and no one can change it but you. I used to think that a terrorist had to come from a foreign country. In these tough economic times not anymore. I often think that a terrorist is usually someone who speaks a foreign language with a plot of revenge now I believe the foreign language is what's on our PCs and Networks. If we keep this up, we may end up being the NEW terrorists. Don't believe me, look at what happened to the guy who created the Blaster virus and ask yourself..."Was HE employed?"
11/2/03: Anonymous says: I hear everyone barking about the CompTIA-Certs. I am a holder of a few CompTIA-Certs and make allot more than my fellow MCSE Cert holders. Not knocking Microsoft Certs or any certs of that matter, but it really boils down to what IT-Business related problems that you can solve and what solutions you can come up with. I choose to get my CompTIA-Certs because it had covered differnt types of issues that did not come uo in a corporate enviornment, they really helped me gain additional knowledge that I could apply to real world situations. Bottom line, if your mad at a any kind of cert that did not get you the dream job you wanted, then you really got some issues. Wake up, these are not the late 90's when you could get a good paying gig cause you knew how to install and uninstall software app's. I have met plenty of MCSE certified people who could describe an unattended installation (Win 2000 Server), but could not pysically do it. Its up to you to bring the skills, not the paper.. I say anyone who wants to get into IT, start out with CompTIA-Certs
11/24/03: Ramone from Neverland Ranch says: This is the best book by far for the A+ Exams: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1584503076/102-3992986-5050568?v=glance
12/15/03: Anonymous says: To all the "negatives". Are you certified? If so, and you're still unemployed, maybe you should look at other aspects of your personality. Certification is a wonderful tool to separate those who know from those who do not, but it is not a guarantee that you will turn into prince charming. Certification, even just A+, is enough to get someone in the door. For an ambitious and intelligent person, often that's all it takes, and they can prove themselves from there. BTW, being negative doesn't help anything. If you don't want to spend your money on certification, then don't... but don't knock those who do and have found them to be helpful.
