18 Free HP Betas Still Open

11/3/2004 -- According to Hewlett Packard's Web site, the company is currently offering 18 free beta exams at Prometric testing centers worldwide.

While some have been open for much of 2004, all are still available. The betas cover a number of technologies, including OpenView, StorageWorks and NonStop. Many count toward the company's Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE), Accredited Platform Specialist (APS) and Accredited Integration Specialist (AIS) credentials, as well as its Certified Systems Engineer (CSE) and sales titles.

The exams are:

Exam Name Beta Exam Number Related Certification
Supporting the MSL 5000 and Stand Alone Tape Devices HP1-237 APS
Supporting OVSAM (OpenView Storage Area Manager) HP1-243 ASE
Advanced Backup Troubleshooting & Tuning HP1-244 ASE

HP Internet Security & e-Commerce Solutions HP1-805 MASE
Implementing HP XP1024/128 Array Solution Fundamentals HP1-891 APC, ASE

Because HP's certification program varies worldwide, some betas may not be available in all locations. If passed, beta exams do count toward HP certifications.

2/19/05: khalid kofahi from Jordan says: what did you mean by beta?
2/23/05: Becky Nagel, Editor from CertCities.com says: Great question, Khalid, and something we should clarify more often in our stories. Betas are early versions of exams. By analyzing the results of a beta run of an exam, the test givers can see what questions don't work, what do, and build the final exam and set final scoring. Because betas usually consist of way more questions than the final exam will, and because most programs need the beta data in order to finalize the exam, the programs will offer the betas at a discount to exam takers, or even free. Hope that helps some! And thanks again for your post -- I'll remember to define betas within stories more in the future. - Becky
