Two More A+ Exams Now Live

11/1/2006 -- Yesterday, the Computing Technology Industry Association announced that two more exams for its newly restructured, vendor-neutral A+ hardware technician certification are now available.

With the new A+, which debuted late September, candidates still take two exams but now are allowed to choose a specialty. Candidates must take the new A+ Essentials exam (220-201), but can choose between these options for the second exam: 220-602, for the typical IT technician; 220-603, focused more for remote support and help desk technicians; and 220-604, for "depot" or "bench" technicians.

603 and 604 are the exams that went live yesterday.

"The most exciting aspect of this update to CompTIA A+ is the flexibility it offers individual candidates and employers," John Venator, president and chief executive officer of CompTIA, said in a released statement. "More than ever before, individuals have the power to take control of their career and focus on specific areas of computer service and support. Employers can select the exam elements that best suit their business needs, assuring that their personnel are certified with the skills most relevant to the job tasks they are performing."

Those who want to take the previous version of the A+ exams can do so at least through December. A retirement schedule is available here.

11/2/06: Anonymous says: Why would you need a prep book? If you have the requisite experience the exams should be relatively easy. ;-) However, I can say with some authority that there's no way anyone could have a prep book available today that adequately covers the topics on the actual exams. If someone wrote a book based on the cert outlines that were released several months ago, they'll be doing re-writes. If anyone could describe the difference between the 601 and 602 exams, (not the outlines, the diff between the actual exams) a lot of publishers would love to hear it. And that, my friends, is the fly in CompTIA's ointment. Those exams share the same questions and the same topics. I wish CompTIA well justifying this. ha!

11/8/06: Anonymous says: Already have A+ cert but took the 601 exam today since I teach it. Don't know about the difference from 602 but liked that fact that they finally got over asking questions about 10 year old technology!
11/9/06: Anonymous says: The 602 is very very similar to 601. The difference is subtle enough that few will notice...other than the domain weighting.
11/27/06: Bankole Adesola from Lagos, Nigeria says: I finished my A plus (Hardware) this June this year proceeding forward to take my OS technologies, can I take any of this 2 new exams as subtitute for it.
11/28/06: Anonymous says: Bankole: no.
12/17/06: Ramone from Brazil says: The difference between 601 and 602 is 601 has a 1 in it and 602 has a 2 in it!
