Cisco Announces CCNP Update

4/29/2003 -- Cisco Systems officially acknowledged today that it is revamping its Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) title.

The news is not unexpected: New versions of title's four core exams have been in beta testing for several weeks. However, today's announcement was the first time Cisco has commented publicly on the upgrade.

The same four core exams will still be required to earn the CCNP (as shown in the chart below):

New Exams (Currently Betas Only)
Old Exams (Registration Available Only Through August 7, 2003)
#643-801 BSCI (Beta) Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (#642-801 when live) #640-901 BSCI Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks
#643-811 Switching (Beta) Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 (BCMSN) (#642-811 when live) #640-604 Switching Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)
#643-821 BCRAN (Beta) Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 (#642-821 when live)
#640-605 Remote Access Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (BCRAN)
#643-831 CIT (Beta) Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support v5.0 (CIT) (#642-831 when live) #640-606 Support Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support (CIT)

However, the content has been upgraded to reflect today's "greater focus of the converged network" in the enterprise, commented Nader Nanjiani, marketing programs manager, Cisco Internet Learning Solutions Group. Topics with more emphasis include security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks, and broadband technologies.

"The CCDP and CCDA have changed in response to converged networks...and the CCNP brings that all together," Nanjiani explained in an interview today. "We want to embed convergent technologies in the knowledge base of our certified professionals."

A press release announcing the revamp also said that the exams will feature additional simulation questions. Cisco declined our request for more details regarding this portion of the announcement.

Nanjiani told CertCities.com that the betas above are targeted to go live in July. As for the current versions, while registration will end August 7, those who register before that date can take the exam up to six weeks later, Nanjiani said. Candidates can mix and match 640- and 642-/643- exams to earn the title.

More details on the CCNP revamp can be found here. Although the site currently makes no mention of revising the CCNP Foundations or recertification exam, Nanjiani said that new versions will indeed be coming and that an official announcement will be made in approximately one month. -B.N.

5/1/03: Anonymous says: For the jump between BCSN and BSCI, CiscoPress offerred a free download of the required IS-IS content. Hopefully this will be the same for the new exams - eg. IPv6 for the new BSCI etc, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Also, it'd be reeeealy helpful if the sylabus' available from Cisco's website for the new betas were at least in the same format as the existing exams in order to know what to cover..mo' money?...not for a while..I have to get through all these exams first!
5/1/03: Anonymous says: The good news is that we can mix and match the new exams with any that have already been taken. I'm all for the updated exams and courses. This will not keep me from achieving the CCNP status.
5/2/03: Anonymous says: Yes you can AT, yes, you, can. ake any current CCNP exams and you can mix and match with the new ones to get your CCNP. Good luck, I'll try to complete mine before August, bought the books already, don't want to waste them for nothing.
5/5/03: yinka from lagos, nigeria says: i think the whole thing is absurd, don,t u pity we african, my dad spent morethan 4month salary to get all the 4studtguild how the hell am i going to pass b4 august. i think ineed a drink .
5/6/03: Anonymous says: I am still going to use the old books and download the whitepages for any new objectives that may be listed for it. There usually isn't a whole lot of new subject matter to warrant buying a new book.
5/7/03: :-(( says: I think Cisco is too fast of changing the exams, so it's best to stick out from them. Don't waste any $$$ to buy any Cisco books, best to get pdf files and read...
5/7/03: Anonymous says: Good luck to all you rats. The cheese lies straight ahead. Ya, Ya!
5/12/03: Nedsky from Philippines says: I think, this change was inevitable. We all have to roll with bunches.
5/13/03: James B. from Phoenix AZ. U.S.A. says: I wish I could wait for the new exams, the eams are being retired for a reason, Old technology, The times are changing and we need to change with them or we will never advance.
5/13/03: Anonymous says: ...and those who just published CCNP books have to cancel/dump them and start writing a new one for the new exam. And those who just bought the Prep Library for over $100 have to buy more or even buy the whole new set...Who would think that CCNP is being revamped again before even a year since the last update, now we can expect Cisco to change the exams monthly and maybe instead of buying study guide books, just go to Kazaa and find downloadable e-book for free, in case the exams changed again the next month...Following up with current technology is good but this whole thing is just an excuse behind the other reasons Cisco revamps exam track 3 times a year...
