Cisco Announces CCNP Update

4/29/2003 -- Cisco Systems officially acknowledged today that it is revamping its Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) title.

The news is not unexpected: New versions of title's four core exams have been in beta testing for several weeks. However, today's announcement was the first time Cisco has commented publicly on the upgrade.

The same four core exams will still be required to earn the CCNP (as shown in the chart below):

New Exams (Currently Betas Only)
Old Exams (Registration Available Only Through August 7, 2003)
#643-801 BSCI (Beta) Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (#642-801 when live) #640-901 BSCI Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks
#643-811 Switching (Beta) Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 (BCMSN) (#642-811 when live) #640-604 Switching Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)
#643-821 BCRAN (Beta) Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 (#642-821 when live)
#640-605 Remote Access Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (BCRAN)
#643-831 CIT (Beta) Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support v5.0 (CIT) (#642-831 when live) #640-606 Support Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support (CIT)

However, the content has been upgraded to reflect today's "greater focus of the converged network" in the enterprise, commented Nader Nanjiani, marketing programs manager, Cisco Internet Learning Solutions Group. Topics with more emphasis include security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks, and broadband technologies.

"The CCDP and CCDA have changed in response to converged networks...and the CCNP brings that all together," Nanjiani explained in an interview today. "We want to embed convergent technologies in the knowledge base of our certified professionals."

A press release announcing the revamp also said that the exams will feature additional simulation questions. Cisco declined our request for more details regarding this portion of the announcement.

Nanjiani told CertCities.com that the betas above are targeted to go live in July. As for the current versions, while registration will end August 7, those who register before that date can take the exam up to six weeks later, Nanjiani said. Candidates can mix and match 640- and 642-/643- exams to earn the title.

More details on the CCNP revamp can be found here. Although the site currently makes no mention of revising the CCNP Foundations or recertification exam, Nanjiani said that new versions will indeed be coming and that an official announcement will be made in approximately one month. -B.N.

4/30/03: Anonymous says: this thing is what makes more people use dumps, don't blame them but blame the greedy vendor. i know that this is cisco's way to kill the dumps, besides to "reflect new techs in the exams". but good news is i heard that if you pass, say 901 and 604, you can continue with the new bcran and cit and still get ccnp.
4/30/03: Frank Pedersen from Trondheim, Norway says: The "old" ccnp books and hands-on,still will do. At least for me, I just took the CIT beta, and have done routing and switching betas. I only read the "old four-pack", with lots of hands-on labs. And I thougt the exams was easy. I enjoyed them, especially the CIT simulation. And yes, you can mix "old and new" exams...
4/30/03: kathir from kuwait says: cant i use my old four books for new four beta exams?
4/30/03: Anonymous says: Cheers Cisco, thanks a bundle, been studting for switching exam and now they change all 4,would have been better spending the money on getting drunk!!
4/30/03: NK says: Thanks to all of you guy who helped me!:-)Cheers!!:)
4/30/03: Mike G. from Colorado says: Like this is a huge shocker. At least I'll be my BCRAN out of the way before the change. As to the toilet mouth comments, what a bunch of ignorant losers.
4/30/03: Becky Nagel from Editor, CertCities.com says: Hi NK -- I think you got your question answered, but just to make it clear you can indeed mix and match the old and new versions of the exams to earn the CCNP (in other words, don't have to take only all old or all new exams). -- Becky
4/30/03: Mike from The Arctic says: It is clear that Cisco had to have known new tests were on the way, and yet they continued to sell the latest certification libraries even as news tests were being ramped up - this shows that they were primarily interested in clearing out inventory of new books, rather than being concerned about the best possible information available for their certifications. As someone else mentioned, it's about mo' money. There is no justificable need to update these exams so quickly. The industry is changing but not so blindingly fast that the entire program needs to be revamped every eight to ten months. Example - 640-504 to 640-604 to 640-900 to 640-901 to.... That said, the best strategy now is to get the the current routing and switching exams out of the way by August, since new information and tests could be dramatically different or updated, especially as Cisco attempts to fight "braindump" and other cramming resources. Mix and match is allowed for CCNP, so follow up with BCRAN and CIT later. Best of luck...
4/30/03: Tomcat says: If it is mix and match of old exam with the new one. I definitely will not take BCRAN because of it legacy technology (no DSL and Cable modem)in the old exam. Besides, i can take a class in commuity college to save some cash to learn it.
5/1/03: NK says: RE:Becky Nagel Thanks!!!:)
