Cisco Announces CCNP Update

4/29/2003 -- Cisco Systems officially acknowledged today that it is revamping its Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) title.

The news is not unexpected: New versions of title's four core exams have been in beta testing for several weeks. However, today's announcement was the first time Cisco has commented publicly on the upgrade.

The same four core exams will still be required to earn the CCNP (as shown in the chart below):

New Exams (Currently Betas Only)
Old Exams (Registration Available Only Through August 7, 2003)
#643-801 BSCI (Beta) Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (#642-801 when live) #640-901 BSCI Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks
#643-811 Switching (Beta) Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 (BCMSN) (#642-811 when live) #640-604 Switching Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)
#643-821 BCRAN (Beta) Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 (#642-821 when live)
#640-605 Remote Access Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (BCRAN)
#643-831 CIT (Beta) Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support v5.0 (CIT) (#642-831 when live) #640-606 Support Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support (CIT)

However, the content has been upgraded to reflect today's "greater focus of the converged network" in the enterprise, commented Nader Nanjiani, marketing programs manager, Cisco Internet Learning Solutions Group. Topics with more emphasis include security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks, and broadband technologies.

"The CCDP and CCDA have changed in response to converged networks...and the CCNP brings that all together," Nanjiani explained in an interview today. "We want to embed convergent technologies in the knowledge base of our certified professionals."

A press release announcing the revamp also said that the exams will feature additional simulation questions. Cisco declined our request for more details regarding this portion of the announcement.

Nanjiani told CertCities.com that the betas above are targeted to go live in July. As for the current versions, while registration will end August 7, those who register before that date can take the exam up to six weeks later, Nanjiani said. Candidates can mix and match 640- and 642-/643- exams to earn the title.

More details on the CCNP revamp can be found here. Although the site currently makes no mention of revising the CCNP Foundations or recertification exam, Nanjiani said that new versions will indeed be coming and that an official announcement will be made in approximately one month. -B.N.

7/9/03: Anonymous says: How do you expect those who just take the Cisco courses to have the same experience as those with 10 yrs of experience, and we're talking official Cisco course here, provided by the vendor itself. Are you in a dreamland to expect such a thing? People need a point to start off, they can't just snap their fingers and then know everything as much as people with years of experience. You just don't give a chance to new generations do you? Do you know how much they have to pay to enroll for the official courses for the knowledge and the certificate? You don't appreciate that because it's not your money that they spent. For all you know is that, whatever they do, whatever they sacrifice, they're not qualified without having 10 yrs experience, like yourself, who unfortunately got laid off because of too high salary that your company can't afford anymore and maybe replaced with a younger one, CCNA or CCNP or MCSE who can live with 10-15k less than your salary, then you're angry and insult them for being useless. How people get experience if they aren't given a chance by people like you? Establish their own company or ISP to be able to learn the real Cisco and so get experience? It just doesn't make sense how you think like that above. Just plain selfish and ridiculous!
7/21/03: ola from las says: hi, why not update this info thought cisco says the date for regristation as beind shifted to september 7 or is its still august 7?
8/2/03: Gupta Vinjarin from Bhopal, India says: Quit whining! If you cannot keep up with the technology, Walmart is always hiring for people like you. I hope more of you stop getting certified and fall back on your years of "monkey" knowledge. Cutting and pasting other peoples work without fully understanding what you are doing. Then running around telling everyone of your "years of networking" experience! Ha! All you whiners will be outsourced..........
8/8/03: Rich Hill from Kansas City, MO says: It's cool folks... first off, you can mix and match old and new tests. Second, they extended the deadline... you can register for the old test up until Sept 7th and you have 45 days after that to take them... so Mid-October. Stop being weenies, just study. It shouldn't take more than 3 months to pass all 4 exams.
9/5/03: Muhammad from Pakistan says: I hate Beta exams, the beta exams pattern is design not for proffesionals, its look like for achieving degree. Numbers of scenarios numbers of questions and furthermore margin getting passing marks is too tough. I believe its good for Cisco ent. point of view but not for proffesionals.
10/25/03: fadi from jordan says: i just took the exam yesterday 642-831... and i was really disapointed about the updates they talked about. there are no updates! just more and more questions about Windows! Windows XP and Windows's updates. not cisco updates!!!
12/1/03: Sajia Choudhury says: Does anyone know, how much do I have to get in order to pass CCNP 642-811 exam. Thanks.
2/26/04: MITSIFTO from uk says: Hi i bought the sybex ccnp study guide kit on the 19th of january 2004. The books have the exam numbers as follows 642-811, 642-831, 642-821, 642-801. Are these books okay to take the current ccnp exam, or are these out of date? My friend told me that Cisco Have for example changed the cisco 4000 series switch OS to IOS which is used on normal 2950's etc? Can anyone help?
