Cisco Announces CCNP Update

4/29/2003 -- Cisco Systems officially acknowledged today that it is revamping its Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) title.

The news is not unexpected: New versions of title's four core exams have been in beta testing for several weeks. However, today's announcement was the first time Cisco has commented publicly on the upgrade.

The same four core exams will still be required to earn the CCNP (as shown in the chart below):

New Exams (Currently Betas Only)
Old Exams (Registration Available Only Through August 7, 2003)
#643-801 BSCI (Beta) Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (#642-801 when live) #640-901 BSCI Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks
#643-811 Switching (Beta) Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 (BCMSN) (#642-811 when live) #640-604 Switching Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)
#643-821 BCRAN (Beta) Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 (#642-821 when live)
#640-605 Remote Access Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (BCRAN)
#643-831 CIT (Beta) Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support v5.0 (CIT) (#642-831 when live) #640-606 Support Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support (CIT)

However, the content has been upgraded to reflect today's "greater focus of the converged network" in the enterprise, commented Nader Nanjiani, marketing programs manager, Cisco Internet Learning Solutions Group. Topics with more emphasis include security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks, and broadband technologies.

"The CCDP and CCDA have changed in response to converged networks...and the CCNP brings that all together," Nanjiani explained in an interview today. "We want to embed convergent technologies in the knowledge base of our certified professionals."

A press release announcing the revamp also said that the exams will feature additional simulation questions. Cisco declined our request for more details regarding this portion of the announcement.

Nanjiani told CertCities.com that the betas above are targeted to go live in July. As for the current versions, while registration will end August 7, those who register before that date can take the exam up to six weeks later, Nanjiani said. Candidates can mix and match 640- and 642-/643- exams to earn the title.

More details on the CCNP revamp can be found here. Although the site currently makes no mention of revising the CCNP Foundations or recertification exam, Nanjiani said that new versions will indeed be coming and that an official announcement will be made in approximately one month. -B.N.

5/13/03: Anonymous says: Guys and Gals, if you cant study the extra stuff on your own without buying new books you probably shouldnt be getting certified. In the real world 99% of answers arent in these books - they just ensure you have the skills to progress further. Youll notice there arent any recertification books out there, because anyone who has worked as a CCNP for 3 years can study up on their own. The books are just a convenient repository of guides, if you cant do anything outside of whats in the books you probably wont get through the exams anyway. The exas change so often because thats how fast things move. If you cant keep up, networking is not for you.
5/15/03: Anonymous from netherlands, amsterdam says: I had ccna, swicthing, preparing for remote access and his brothers. Now cisco has changed the exams so am i going to continue with the last exams in CCNP with the new track, or what i had passed in the old track is valid or invalid? somebody should answer me please.
5/15/03: kuljit from C-DAC Mohali says: cisco also following Microsoft Exam pattren .but according to me cisco persons are killing theirself , soon they will lose charm .
6/1/03: Anonymous says: ok, guys. "You can register till 7th Aug but can take exam six week later, does that mean that I can take 2 old exams before 7th August and the other old 2 after that if I have registred for them before 7th Aug. i.e can I take 901 as example at Sep if registration done before 7th Aug?
6/4/03: bill says: You can write the old exams for CCNP before Aug 7th...6 weeks after Aug 7th you can still write the old exams provided you registrar before Aug 7th.. That's how i see it...
6/12/03: Max from UK says: Is 7 August the last date to register for the current versions of CCNP exams, or is the 7th August the last date for taking them, or is it both?
6/15/03: Anonymous says: Bill's post says it all...register by Aug 7 and take the exam 6 weeks after, the latest.
6/26/03: suomynonA from sallaD says: I guess cisco is afraid of the increasing number of it techies on paper who cant wire up a routed network when hired.....All said and done it seems an obvious lack of credible competition is getting to cisco's head. Remember MCSE. I dont know a receptionist who doesnt have at least one version. Their books are way overpackaged. ......what...what did you say ...they are breaking down ccna into two ...huh :it never ends
7/1/03: Robin from Maryland says: If you guys check on cisco website, they have extended the dead line to September 7 as the last day to register for the exam. They are giving you another month.
7/9/03: Anonymous says: Reading all these comments from folks thinking that Cisco certs are losing their value got me looking around the web. Did you know that the Cisco Network Academy process generates more than CCNA candidates? The second semester work focuses on CCNP work and Cisco is working hard to encourage that program. The Cisco Network Academy program is taught in many high schools, junior and 4-year colleges. I have sat-in on some of those classes as an observer so I could personally see the "lack of quality" that is turned out by the program. When asked a few questions by myself, many of the students asked, "Where is that in the textbook?" Just what all us out of work EXPERIENCED and SKILLED network engineers need...a bunch of snot-nosed kids with CCNP certs willing to work for next-to-nothing because they really only know next-to-nothing about networking.
