Cisco Announces CCNP Update

4/29/2003 -- Cisco Systems officially acknowledged today that it is revamping its Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) title.

The news is not unexpected: New versions of title's four core exams have been in beta testing for several weeks. However, today's announcement was the first time Cisco has commented publicly on the upgrade.

The same four core exams will still be required to earn the CCNP (as shown in the chart below):

New Exams (Currently Betas Only)
Old Exams (Registration Available Only Through August 7, 2003)
#643-801 BSCI (Beta) Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (#642-801 when live) #640-901 BSCI Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks
#643-811 Switching (Beta) Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 (BCMSN) (#642-811 when live) #640-604 Switching Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)
#643-821 BCRAN (Beta) Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 (#642-821 when live)
#640-605 Remote Access Building Cisco Remote Access Networks (BCRAN)
#643-831 CIT (Beta) Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support v5.0 (CIT) (#642-831 when live) #640-606 Support Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Support (CIT)

However, the content has been upgraded to reflect today's "greater focus of the converged network" in the enterprise, commented Nader Nanjiani, marketing programs manager, Cisco Internet Learning Solutions Group. Topics with more emphasis include security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks, and broadband technologies.

"The CCDP and CCDA have changed in response to converged networks...and the CCNP brings that all together," Nanjiani explained in an interview today. "We want to embed convergent technologies in the knowledge base of our certified professionals."

A press release announcing the revamp also said that the exams will feature additional simulation questions. Cisco declined our request for more details regarding this portion of the announcement.

Nanjiani told CertCities.com that the betas above are targeted to go live in July. As for the current versions, while registration will end August 7, those who register before that date can take the exam up to six weeks later, Nanjiani said. Candidates can mix and match 640- and 642-/643- exams to earn the title.

More details on the CCNP revamp can be found here. Although the site currently makes no mention of revising the CCNP Foundations or recertification exam, Nanjiani said that new versions will indeed be coming and that an official announcement will be made in approximately one month. -B.N.

4/29/03: David from Hesperia, CA says: I already purchased all four CCNP study books, and can't possibly take all four tests before August. This means I'll probably have to purchase three new books.
4/29/03: James MSCE-4/2K CCNA, Linux+ from Allentown, PA says: David, I'm in total agreement with you, as well as in the same boat. While I respect Cisco for the revamp, They just came out with the CCNP certification library 2nd ED. in late February (which didn't get released until mid-late March. Which by the way, was extremely hard to purchase due to back orders.) If they knew they was going to come out with a revamp of the CCNP, why did they make people purchase the books(Library Set)? Moreover, why not include the updated/new objectives in the 2nd ED of the CCNP Library.(CicsoPress books.) While I'm not upset nor bitter, but no one has money to be throwing around (though my company is picking up the tab). I repect my company and it's not fair to them. Lots of luck David!
4/29/03: Anonymous says: Geez, wow, shocker. Like anyone cares anymore after ten thousand program changes this week alone.
4/29/03: Anonymous says: Cisco is getting nastier.. Changes. Changes and Changes. While it's good to exercise changes time to time, ensuring updateness... BUT, too sudden and too many change is seen as a money-making scheme. Take for example security CSS-1, before getting any wide recognition it's changed to CCSP Let's ignore cisco cert.. they are not worth as they used to anyway.
4/29/03: Anonymous says: It's so nice to see that I can get under your skin so much with only two words! Loser! mo' money for life!
4/29/03: Anonymous says: Cisco is making life tough not easier.... By annousing new version of certification almost every 8 months.
4/29/03: Anonymous says: Another good way for Cisco to earn money, by selling expensive cource books. Which is never available in market on time.
4/29/03: Tony says: Technology is changing rapidly. If you can't keep up, find a new career. I like to stay on top of my game. I guess Cisco thinks the same way.
4/29/03: NK says: I didn't understood what will happen if I didn't pass the rest 3 of the CCNP exams till 7 August'll have to pass again the routing exam ??!!??Or they going to admit it and I'll have to study the new versions only of the remaining exams??? I hope you'll excuse my english:-)
4/29/03: Victor from Latvia,Riga says: I'm a CCNA now. My company just buyed a full set of books to prepare for a CCNP. I think , that it 's completely possible to pass ALL current exams till 07.08. I don't think that it's a problem. Futhermore you can easily MIX old exams with the new . So, It's OK. Cisco - do great things.
