CompTIA To Raise Exam Fees

1/1/2002 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) announced recently that it will raise the price of its certification exams on Feb. 1, 2002.

In the U.S., the cost of its A+ exams will rise from $132 to $139 on Feb. 1. Prices for other exams, including Network+, i-Net+ and Linux+, will rise from $190 to $199.

The last time CompTIA raised its exam fees was in January 2001, when it upped the priceapx. $5 US This time around, the increase will also effect several countries worldwide. For a complete list, click here. -B.N.

1/6/02: Mr. says: You may as well spend the $199 on something worthwhile like Gamecube, software/hardware to upgrade your computer, new clothes. Don't spend $199 (of your own money) on a piece of paper that won't do diddlysquat for you (at least without a BS degree).
1/7/02: Anonymous says: WAAAA WAAAAA WAAAAA WAAAAA what a bunch of whining, cries babies. If you cant afford the price of these exams, then you dont belong in the IT field to begin with. if your company wont reimburse you, then youre with the wrong company. write them off on your taxes, shut up and move on.
1/7/02: ZEUS says: Some people (see above) have too much time on their hands.
1/8/02: Anonymous says: CompTIA and these certifications are a joke. Never take a BETA exam from them! I took one and have been waiting for the results for over 6 months!! The Beta results have been pushed back twice! Glad I'm not trying to rely on these certs for a job! These exams are WAY overpriced and are not worth much in the Industry! Spend the money on MCSE or CCNA!
1/11/02: Anonymous says: I think that CompTIA certifications are great. Is a one time fee and your are certified for life. You can also use there certifications towards other certifications tracks. Microsoft will take the A+/Network+ or the A+/Server+ toward there MCSA. Novell also take CompTIA certification toward the CNE track. Intel take the Server+ towards there certification tracks. How many certifications you know in the computer industry that you can use in more than one verdor-neutral or verdor-specific certification track.?. You want expensive. I am taking one teaching course on the University. The cost of this course is $253.00 dollars and I can't even used this course toward my master degree. But I have to take it to comply with my teacher requirements. Pardon my English is not the best.
1/17/02: Anonymous from D.C. says: I just took (and passed) the Linux+ exam. I thought CompTIA did a good job on this one. I applaud them for going after the braindump sites. M$ should do the same but that would be contrary to their objectives (creating a huge dumbed-down sales force). CompTIA is increasing in stature. Microsoft is becoming an embarassment.
1/18/02: Mark Irvine says: Comptia has excellent certifications, filling a void that no other company has. How many MCSE's have little knowledge of hardware? Many from my experience. I regularily meet Admins that have little idea what a Array Controller does or how it works, but manage a large LAN. Comptia is a great start and 10 bucks to increase the price is nothing.
3/21/02: Anonymous says: I think it's nuts that they've raised these tests like this. I'm glad I got my A+ 2 years ago. I still paid $256 for it. I wanted to get Server+, iNet+, Linux+ and Network+, but I can't afford them all. I'll plan on CCNA and CNA for now.
4/4/02: Rob from NJ says: CompTIA certs are for life! $199 and you don't have to take another test when the next version of Windows comes out, R U listening Microsoft?
5/10/02: HAM from Dallas says: As someone stated before, if you are a true IT Professional: 1)either your company will reimburse you if they aren't flat out paying for the certification or you're with the wrong company 2)write it off on your taxes & move on or 3) you should have some extra money (or monies) anyway to spend on certification if you want to get ahead and stay there. Watered down certs with mass numbers attainng them devalues any certification. The prices are not alot of money if you know what you're doing and have a career goal mapped out. If you're stuck on prices, then you're not dedicated to the field. Get the cert and get to work! Too many claiming IT Professional status when they're really amateurs when time comes to show & prove. If you know it, show it, but dont be appalled when sooner or later your bluff is called.
