CompTIA Raises Exam Prices 5 Percent Worldwide

7/1/2005 -- Today the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) raised the price of all its certification exams worldwide. The new prices are effective immediately.

In the U.S., the organization's two A+ exams have gone from $145 to $153 (non-member price), an increase of 5.5 percent.

The Security+, e-Biz+, CTT+ (VBT) and CDIA+ exams have gone from $225 to $237, an increase of 5.3 percent.

Network+, Server+, Project+, Linux+, i-Net+, HTI+ and CTT+ (CBT) exams now cost $218, an increase of 5.3 percent over the previous price of $207.

The last time CompTIA raised its exam prices was in April 2003.

According to CompTIA spokesperson Steven Ostrowski, the organization raised the prices now to cover added costs of delivering the exams, but "tried to keep the increase as minimal as possible while still covering our additional costs."

Unlike in previous years, CompTIA did not pre-announce this fee hike. When asked why CompTIA decided not to pre-announce this time, Ostrowski commented: "Other companies don't pre-annouce price increases on their products."

According to Ostroskwi, while the new prices are effective immediately, vouchers purchased based on the old exam prices will remain valid until their expiration date -- these candidates will not need to pay any extra amount. Any discount coupons or other offers will also remain valid, he said.

Candidates who registered for an exam prior to the increase but did not buy a voucher and did not take their exam before today will have to pay the new exam price. Ostroskwi said that the "majority" of exam candidates do purchase a voucher when they register.

CompTIA will continue to offer corporate member and volume discounts. -Becky Nagel

7/2/05: Purple Herman from Toronto says: "Added costs of delivering the exams"? Give me a break! I don't think it's necessary to "pre-announce" what I think of CompTia and their money-grubbing attitude...
7/4/05: Robert Flemen says: What a joke. What cost? The SME's are all volunteer. The network of exam delivery is existing...what has changed? NOTHING. I will never take another CompTIA exam they are an absolute joke.
7/4/05: MP says: overpriced....
7/5/05: Anonymous says: I think that the costs that VUE and Prometric charge CompTIA to host thier tests has gone up over the last 2 years. 5% does not seem to be too big of a deal?
7/5/05: Anonymous says: What a justification!!!!! "Other companies don't pre-annouce price increases on their products." CompTIA, you are representing IT industry. You are not a company.
7/5/05: Paul from Canada says: Oh! GetCertify4Less also have increased their voucher prices to reflect this CompTIA price increase. FAQ http://www.getcertify4less.com/comptiapricechange070105.asp
7/5/05: Anonymous says: 5% on top of exams which are already 35-40% overpriced is a HUGE deal...
7/5/05: Anonymous from Australia says: All costs for everthing in life go up, so it isn't any surprise really. I expect other vendors will also follow suit. Comptia's A+ and Nework+ exams are very popular base level certification exams in Australia for those starting out in IT roles, usually Service Desk staff wanting a wider career in IT before taking on Microsoft training, so as long as there is still the need for these certs then people will still sit the exam regardless of a small price increase in order to progress their careers.
7/5/05: Mike says: I can not see how they can charge someone more money after they already paid for the exam that should be illegal
7/6/05: Abel from Madrid - Spain says: It's not a surprise, ok... but that's not the point: I'm not surprised, I'm pissed off!! Robert is right. All of the test centers ALREADY MUST provide the needed resources, because it's a requirement for them, to be a certified Microsoft, Cisco (,etc.) course provider as well. It's a must and it's their problem. In fact, you can complain to Prometric calling them, if any test center wants to charge you any additional "administrative" costs, if you schedule a test with you credit card in the website. I already did. And Prometric and VUE are not forcing any price change to the other companies, so we can correctly think that this price rise is unillateral by CompTIA. I have taken three CompTIA exams, and they were always greedy. Let's see the A plus exam... is it really needed to pass TWO exams with this so stupid and basic content!? Double pay for CompTIA! It's too much for a "non-profit" organization, I think. And they don't give a sh*t if you are in a country with a lower salary than others like the States or Australia. Don't lie to yourself: you are always paying for your exams, right? How many of us work in a company who pay for that? Less than a 50%, for sure... Ah, they could tell you: "Our certifications are for life, as they don't expire". Ha! Then... why are you updating the exams content every 2-3 years? Because like any other IT related knowledge, it expires BY ITSELF! I can't go to a job interview and say to them: "-Hey, my certs are six years old but don't worry, the knowledge about newer technologies was misteriously and magically flowing to my mind in all this time!". Any who sits doing nothing with a "non-expiring" cert is doomed. We all know that... Are CompTIA trying to lie to us, or they simply think we are stupid? OK, all the companies gone crazy with the prices in the past years... let's not forget Microsoft exams, which were around $40 six years ago (now a 400% of that), but you can compare MS and CompTIA to HP, and you will find a serious difference... And, BTW, I got my last job because of a simple ProLiant APS cert. I'm not giving more money to the overpriced and OVERVALUED CompTIA exams, my friends... Not ever again.
