CompTIA Raises Exam Prices 5 Percent Worldwide

7/1/2005 -- Today the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) raised the price of all its certification exams worldwide. The new prices are effective immediately.

In the U.S., the organization's two A+ exams have gone from $145 to $153 (non-member price), an increase of 5.5 percent.

The Security+, e-Biz+, CTT+ (VBT) and CDIA+ exams have gone from $225 to $237, an increase of 5.3 percent.

Network+, Server+, Project+, Linux+, i-Net+, HTI+ and CTT+ (CBT) exams now cost $218, an increase of 5.3 percent over the previous price of $207.

The last time CompTIA raised its exam prices was in April 2003.

According to CompTIA spokesperson Steven Ostrowski, the organization raised the prices now to cover added costs of delivering the exams, but "tried to keep the increase as minimal as possible while still covering our additional costs."

Unlike in previous years, CompTIA did not pre-announce this fee hike. When asked why CompTIA decided not to pre-announce this time, Ostrowski commented: "Other companies don't pre-annouce price increases on their products."

According to Ostroskwi, while the new prices are effective immediately, vouchers purchased based on the old exam prices will remain valid until their expiration date -- these candidates will not need to pay any extra amount. Any discount coupons or other offers will also remain valid, he said.

Candidates who registered for an exam prior to the increase but did not buy a voucher and did not take their exam before today will have to pay the new exam price. Ostroskwi said that the "majority" of exam candidates do purchase a voucher when they register.

CompTIA will continue to offer corporate member and volume discounts. -Becky Nagel

7/6/05: Richard says: Hey Mike, you weren't reading, no increase if you already purchased vouchers. If registered, but don't buy a voucher until the day of the exam, you pay the new price.
7/6/05: Scott says: Overpriced to begin with, now even more so. Test centers are poorly equiped. Tests of questionable quality. Now a price increase! Forget it. I will never again take a Comptia exam. The bang for the buck just isn't there. My suggestion to eveyone, concentrate on vendor specific certifications, they cost less and carry more weight in the real world.
7/6/05: Anonymous says: Abel, How do you compare MS and HP to Comptia? I seem to remember a little bit of Software and Hardware that MS and HP offer to supplament the price of thier exams. ComptIA has no other products that I know of so the price of the exam is their only source of revenue.
7/6/05: BuyMoreParts from USA says: Come on, 5% increase? What is everyone stressing about? The A exams increased by $8 each which is equivalent to two mocha lattes. You can save that much by skipping the heavy morning brew and taking a walk -- a much more healthy approach to life than posting negatively on this price increase and complaining about a minimal change. Life is expensive -- pay up.
7/6/05: Anonymous says: I think certification exams are all already over-priced. But hey, if it keeps the number of certified professionals low, and I get a return on my investment so as to at least break even, then so be it.
7/7/05: Anonymous says: There is a Plan "B". http://www.eta-sda.org/certification/comps/cst.pdf And they accept A Plus for CST. Then look at CNST, and go from there.
7/7/05: mike says: Richard it says who registered but did not buy the voucher. I am not sure how it is everywhere but I always had to pay for the test when I registered. If I wanted to take the test July 15th and I registered July 1st I had to pay to reserve my seat.
7/7/05: Anonymous from Philippines says: This is an overkill. They're exam prices are twice or even triple compare to MS and other certs. I agree with Abel. I plan to take a Network exam but now I changed my mind. I rather take a CCNA which really is "something" and covers lots of skill.
7/8/05: Dave says: I don't really think you can compare prices for Microsoft exams to CompTIA. Microsoft can accept exams as a loss leader and make up revenue with software. CompTIA has no other revenue just like PMI and the PMP exam. PMP is $500.
7/11/05: Bill from Bowie says: Already overpriced. CompTia will probaly get thank you cards from the other organizations. In the world of economics certifications are not inelastics. There are other certifications that people will take instead of CompTia's. If they wanted more income then they should have lowered the price on all exams. Lower prices means more people can afford there exams.
