CompTIA Relaunching Gartner Certs April 2

3/30/2001 -- On April 2, the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) will relaunch two certifications it bought from the Gartner Group in February.

According to Fran Linhart, director of certification for CompTIA and a former Gartner certification manager, the name of the certifications have been changed -- "Project Management" is now "IT Project+," and "e-Business Fundamentals" is now "e-Biz+" -- however, the objectives remain the same.

IT Project+ is "designed for IT professionals with 12 months of experience in leading, managing and directing small IT projects. IT Project+ examines the business, interpersonal and technical skills required to successfully manage IT projects, as defined by experts in the industry," according to the CompTIA Web site.

e-Biz+ is "designed for technical and non-technical individuals who work in an e-Business environment. The exam measures a baseline of knowledge around the basic concepts, key issues and critical technologies of e-Business, supplying IT and business professionals with a foundation for contributing to e-Business solutions."

Linhart said that these two titles compliment CompTIA's current crop of certifications well. She explained that for those who first get the organization's A+, Network+ and/or other certifications, these new offerings are a logical next step. "Odds are, as you [move up in IT], you will do more and more project management. You need to be held accountable for the business side and the people knowledge that surround [such projects]."

Those already certified in the now-defunct Gartner versions will automatically be grandfathered into the new titles. To request a new certificate and a CompTIA I.D. card, call (630) 268-1818.

Like CompTIA's other certifications, IT Project+ and e-Biz+ are obtained by passing one multiple-choice exam, available through Vue and Prometric. Following is the basic outline for each:

Name of Exam IT Project+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 85
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code PK0-001
Languages English

Name of Exam e-Biz+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 60
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code EK0-001
Languages English

Further details on the certifications can be found on the CompTIA Web site. For e-Biz+, click here. For IT Project+, click here. -B.N.

After 0 studying and staying up the previous nite till 4 AM playing Roller Coaster Tycoon, I passed both A+ exams back to back starting at 9 AM. Im glad all of you have found great jobs at McDonalds, but please leave the REAL IT work to people like me.
9/7/01: Anonymous says: please may i know if there is a testing center for comptia certification in KENYA OR TANZANIA and where they are?

9/12/01: dan says: I have my A+ under the 98 objectives and took them as adaptive tests....on this terrible day Sept 11, 2001...the day America was attacked in an act of war....I passed my Network+ test with an 826...for all of these tests I studied the Exam Cram series books from Corolis....I studied them enough to have a vague understanding of the subjects....I took the practice tests over and over until I knew all of the awnsers....I learned why the awnsers were correct and I studied for several months....after studying the A+ materials I was able to build my own working computer and get a job on a pc helpdesk at which I do as well as the next guy....I dont know everything.....but who does.....I have no hands on experiance what so ever in networking and do not have a full understanding of how to set up a network.....but I sure can pick those right awnsers on the Comptia tests....thats why I make $2.75 an hour more than my more experienced but uncertified counterparts.....THANKS COMPTIA!!!!
9/13/01: kittric says: I just want to comment to the majority of you with negative thoughts of the A+ cert, it is a difficult test as i failed my first core attempt, but after 3mo of renewed study and concentration i found the second attempt much easier and on the same day i passed the OS. trying to find a position to use the cert is much a harder task but that is okay i will keep looking and keep getting certifications until my experience catches up with my certifications. Eventually the services industry will find out that comptia does prepare their graduates for real life environment.
9/16/01: Anonymous says: Look, all the whiners, that could not pass or don't want to take any exam to certify for a Computer professional ( either software or hardware ). Just couple of exams that if an average intelligence person can pass in a year, and can make big bugs even bigger than a Bachelor of Science Degree salaries in some areas. NO PAIN NO GAIN my friend!
9/16/01: Warren says: Just Passed both test for A+,God bless America.
9/18/01: dingaan says: May i know what are the chances of employment in USA with the A+ Comptia qualification.
9/21/01: bill says: I think CopmTia should offer a "Grasp of the English language and grammar syntax +" exam for some of you people. Jeez! As for trying to cut it in the US with just an A+ cert, you can forget it guy! Go to college and get a degree or two or three to complement your certs. There's no sense in having certs. if you can't do anything with them.
9/22/01: Anonymous says: Has anyone taken the adaptive test for the OS?
