CompTIA Relaunching Gartner Certs April 2

3/30/2001 -- On April 2, the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) will relaunch two certifications it bought from the Gartner Group in February.

According to Fran Linhart, director of certification for CompTIA and a former Gartner certification manager, the name of the certifications have been changed -- "Project Management" is now "IT Project+," and "e-Business Fundamentals" is now "e-Biz+" -- however, the objectives remain the same.

-- advertisement (story continued below) --

IT Project+ is "designed for IT professionals with 12 months of experience in leading, managing and directing small IT projects. IT Project+ examines the business, interpersonal and technical skills required to successfully manage IT projects, as defined by experts in the industry," according to the CompTIA Web site.

e-Biz+ is "designed for technical and non-technical individuals who work in an e-Business environment. The exam measures a baseline of knowledge around the basic concepts, key issues and critical technologies of e-Business, supplying IT and business professionals with a foundation for contributing to e-Business solutions."

Linhart said that these two titles compliment CompTIA's current crop of certifications well. She explained that for those who first get the organization's A+, Network+ and/or other certifications, these new offerings are a logical next step. "Odds are, as you [move up in IT], you will do more and more project management. You need to be held accountable for the business side and the people knowledge that surround [such projects]."

Those already certified in the now-defunct Gartner versions will automatically be grandfathered into the new titles. To request a new certificate and a CompTIA I.D. card, call (630) 268-1818.

Like CompTIA's other certifications, IT Project+ and e-Biz+ are obtained by passing one multiple-choice exam, available through Vue and Prometric. Following is the basic outline for each:

Name of Exam IT Project+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 85
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code PK0-001
Languages English

Name of Exam e-Biz+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 60
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code EK0-001
Languages English

Further details on the certifications can be found on the CompTIA Web site. For e-Biz+, click here. For IT Project+, click here. -B.N.

8/8/01: A+, Network+, MCSE cert holder says: I passed A+ when it was in Beta in Dec 2000. It was cheaper! A+ is not too difficult but don't waste you money taking the test before you study at least ONE A+ book ( Any book will do the trick). Network+ is pretty much equivalent to Network essential in MCSE test but easier. No matter how much real world experience you have, you have to study a book before the A+ and/or Network+ tests.
8/10/01: Steve says: I am a recent MSIS graduate but now I want some certifications. I have read through all the comments and I am shocked at what I am reading. the combination of terrible writing skills, self-pity, and arrogance makes me wonder what kind of people are populating the industry. I have two years left in the military, suring which time I will accumulate some skills and certifications. After that, I can not wait to have you all for breakfast!
8/10/01: Steve says: Wow...am I ignorant! Try again. I am a recent MSIS graduate but now I want some certifications. I have read through all the comments and I am shocked at what I am reading. The combination of terrible writing skills, self-pity, and arrogance makes me wonder what kind of people are populating the industry. I have two years left in the military, during which time I will accumulate some skills and certifications. After that, I can not wait to have you all for breakfast!
8/11/01: Sickboy says: Well, I've already spent my 4 years in the military at the infamous Ft. Bragg. I currently hold the A+, Netwrok+, I-Net+ and my CNE.... Good luck eating me for breakfast, I'm more of a brunch food.... and be carefull of indigestion. 82nd AB RedLeg.
8/13/01: Kimberly says: I think it is great that Comptia has taken the management side of the house into consideration, however for those of us that like books and cds to study from..your out of luck! If there is a prep book for the exam, I would love to see it.
8/16/01: Mohamed says: I am preparing for A+ exams both Hardware and operating system. Hardware first and operating system after. With ever changing exams I am not as confident as I was before the change. I was confortable with Windows 95 but windows 2000 is making me very uncomfortable. Can anyone suggest any form of help?
8/17/01: trelane says: people, some people are good at tests, some arent. get some experience, take a couple tests.dont get super caught up in certifications, there good to have, but you also got to know somewhat about how things really work when on the job- A+ is cool, man :>
8/17/01: trelane says: dont misunderstand me, certifications are a good thing to have, and today lots of companies do require that you have certain ones, it was a little different when i started out in this field years ago, though...
8/20/01: Semy says: Hi, everybody. Most of you should be ashamed for what you posted. I just don't understand the hostility in your writings. I hope only that the IT professionals in the real world are not like this-McDonalds might be the better choice in that case. Computer geeks already have a weirdo image, and you only prove that true. For people seeking A+ certification I have one advice. Study the text books (M. Meyers' , for examle) rather than relying on the questions. Use the questions ONLY for practice. There are so many possible questions that only studying the material can guarantee your success. Good luck.
8/25/01: bobby says: Thanks semy IT I have the m.meyers book and 8 interactive cd course and the material so clear it almost seems to easy to be true.
