UPDATED:CompTIA To Raise Exam Prices 4 Percent in April

3/11/2003 -- A spokesperson for the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) told CertCities.com today that it will be raising prices on most of its certification exams 4 percent next month.

On April 11, the non-member price of CompTIA's A+ exams will rise to $145, an increase of $6. Most of its other exams -- including Network+, Linux+, Server+ and i-Net+ -- will cost $207, up from their current $199 price tag.

The cost of CompTIA's Security+ exam will not change. Its non-member price is $225.

CompTIA posted the following statement explaining the increase on its Web site: "Pricing adjustments are necessary to allow for continued exam maintenance and upgrading. As technology develops, continued review and upgrading of test items ensures that the certifications continue to accurately reflect current industry standards."

CompTIA typically raises exam prices incrementally every year. Last year, prices rose from $5 to $9 dollars per exam, or 4.5 to 5 percent. The hike generally comes in January.

The above nonmember prices (members are eligible for discounts) are valid for North America. CompTIA said on its Web site that it will post any international prices affected as the information becomes available.

3/11/03: Blah says: I don't know what to think of this, Maybe this will keep the Wannabe IT pros away. There prices are high and now we can't buy vouchers but as long as they keep there certs lifetime certs then I will be ok with them raising the prices of there exams a bit.
3/11/03: Anonymous says: Why not raise it to 40% instead, i know some morons who willing to pay for it.
3/12/03: Terry Garbo from Lajes Field, the Azores says: Boy...good thing Comptia did that. I would hate to think that they are missing out on any money. Let's see now...that should raise the price of Network to the over 200 dollar mark, for what is essentially Network Essentials. I love CISCO even more now!
3/12/03: Viper from Israel says: Last week, i took, and passed, the A+ Core Hardware exam. It was easy. In fact, it was too easy. It was the most untechnical exam i've seen. The exam was a joke, and a major disappointment for me. I honestly thought "entry level" meant more than "Read a book once or twice - you'll pass". Certs are supposed to prove your ability to get the job done, to yourself and to potential employers. This exam (maybe the Core OS too, which i'll be taking next week) doesn't. To my surprise, the exam didn't have anything to do with... harwdare troubleshooting. Add the ridiculous price of CompTIA exams (200$ for an A+ exam in Israel, but 139$ isn't that much better). What do you get? I'm glad the A+ is the only CompTIA cert employers (at least in Israel) require. After taking this exam, if I were an employer, I'd have applicants pass an in-house exam. If this is the face of CompTIA certs, i'm not interested. I'll be taking the Core OS exam, i'll finish what I started, and that's it. Certs that mean nothing and cost way too much money aren't my cup of tea. I know, paying 200$ for a lifetime certification isn't a lot. But certs that never expire mean nothing, especially if they were worthless to begin with. BTW, banning the reselling of vouchers can be considered fair, in a way. However, raising the exam prices a week after, is a cynical money making scheme. CompTIA? Non-profit? They've got quite a racket going on.
3/12/03: whatajoke from north carolina says: what a joke..they keep raising prices but I cant see to find a job with 4 of comptia certs..what are they really worth..and now they raise price???? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM????? HOW Do WE LIVE?
3/12/03: Anonymous says: I am sure you can find work at McDonalds.
3/12/03: Anonymous says: It true, it true, it true.
3/12/03: David from ATL says: CompTia is crazy! The certs aren't worth much anyway and they want to raise the price. Certification buissiness will surely be dieing soon. I know I'm going to get the BS degree and forget about certs. This whole racket has gotten out of control.
3/12/03: Billllllll says: I don't work for Cisco, but suggest the CCNA as a very good alternative to Comptia certs... good real-world experience needed or at least use of routing sims. It's pretty well a good bet if you want to prove you know your entry level networking stuff, and "only" $125.00
3/12/03: BetMen from USA says: Hey you suck!!! Whatever you say "mo money mo money" shit didn't help anything but raised the exams price. So keep whinning and hoping the exams price will lower...in your DREAM!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
