Security+ Launches with $225 Exam Fee

12/4/2002 -- On Monday, CompTIA launched its latest certification, Security+. The highly-anticipated, entry-level security title comes with the highest price point for a standard, proctored CompTIA exam: $225 U.S. non-members ($175 U.S. members).

Currently, most of the organization's exams cost $199 U.S. non-member.

Chief Operating Officer Brian McCarthy told CertCities that the new price point was associated with the increased cost of development of this exam, due to factors such as the topic matter and more industry and partner involvement, including the U.S. government. "There's extra costs associated with that..." McCarthy explained. "We have to look at all our costs...and how to recover them" on an exam-by-exam basis.

He also said that although the company literature the price point is labeled as "introductory," there are no current plans to increase the cost of the exam. He said that the organization is currently reevaluating its exam pricing, as it does every year, but that it hadn't made a decision yet on whether to increase exam prices overall in 2003 -- or whether, if it does, Security+ would be included.

Last year, CompTIA raised most of its exam fees by $9 U.S. non-members

McCarthy said that whatever the company decides to do, it will notify candidates of any planned fee increase at least 30 days in advance.

12/5/02: CertDude from Anywhere says: Thats f*cking high for a cert. It must be the high cert out there.
12/4/02: CompTIA Certified says: That price for Security+ is over-priced. Most employers only know the Aplus exam and don't know or care who CompTIA is.
12/4/02: Anonymous says: I took and passed the Beta exam for Security+ on September 30--the last day to take the Beta. I found it to be an excellent exam. The Beta was only $90, but included many more questions than the real exam. I feel it was money well spent. If you don't know who CompTIA is, then you msut be new to the world of certification.
12/5/02: Anonymous says: It is a sellers market so CompTIA is charging high price because it knwos well that people will pay -they have no choice.I fully expect CompTIA to increase prices on all tests.
12/5/02: CertifyME says: That is rediculous for a CompTIA exam. And I for one will NOT be paying it.
12/5/02: Anonymous says: They're charging too much because security is the sexy buzzword of the moment. What a joke!
12/5/02: your right says: Hey, you know what though? They are charging a lot BUT you pass and your done. Not like MS that puts you on life support and drains you of money for the rest of your life. Pretend like that cost is also the incurred cost of continued recertification and you will realize that it is not very expensive... also, I want it to be high so people dont take it 85 times to pass it, it will keep the numbers down. For all the little complaints out there, it could be worse... you can drop 400 for the CISSP. Stop complaining already.
12/5/02: anonymous says: Certdude and all you other complainers, stop complaining. Your not paying your bills, spending all your money on computers and other stuff, and your complaining about a cert cost. Get real.
12/5/02: re - YOUR RIGHT says: Don't go giving them any ideas. Most certs were forever to begin with....then later changed into the pay as you rust-erode your skills away after a certain number of months...just to get oiled again on your resume...who cares if you can pass a test or not???? What really matters is that you can fix the customer's problem and meet their needs, which is something the tests do not teach you. Sure you may get some knowledge by studying, but if you are in the tech field you do that for fun anyway. Specailize in something, learn your job and do it well...even if you hate it. If it means life or death, change jobs....there are others. Price of tests? don't like the price...don't take the dam test....Don't like CompTia.......don't take their tests. CCIE costs you about $1500 bucks a pop now, or more counting hotel and airfare. JUST FOR ONE LAB EXAM. do people still pay it? YES every single day. Do they bitch...no they are too busy studying anything they can get their hands and eyes on. Security is not a sexy buzzword. Security is a nasty word. I for one am glad there are pugealists out there who enjoy doing it so I won't have to.
12/5/02: Developer from Michigan says: Pricing: Go to CompTIA's website and look at who drove this cert. Throw away the book sellers, and you've got some heavy hitters and the government. Will a lot of people take this exam? You bet. And look who will be paying...not individuals, but companies--big ones. CompTIA was smart to charge a higher fee. This is probably their most important cert in a long, long time. If it means I get a job because I have this one, I'll pay the money right away. I think you guys would, too. :-)
