Security+ Launches with $225 Exam Fee

12/4/2002 -- On Monday, CompTIA launched its latest certification, Security+. The highly-anticipated, entry-level security title comes with the highest price point for a standard, proctored CompTIA exam: $225 U.S. non-members ($175 U.S. members).

Currently, most of the organization's exams cost $199 U.S. non-member.

Chief Operating Officer Brian McCarthy told CertCities that the new price point was associated with the increased cost of development of this exam, due to factors such as the topic matter and more industry and partner involvement, including the U.S. government. "There's extra costs associated with that..." McCarthy explained. "We have to look at all our costs...and how to recover them" on an exam-by-exam basis.

He also said that although the company literature the price point is labeled as "introductory," there are no current plans to increase the cost of the exam. He said that the organization is currently reevaluating its exam pricing, as it does every year, but that it hadn't made a decision yet on whether to increase exam prices overall in 2003 -- or whether, if it does, Security+ would be included.

Last year, CompTIA raised most of its exam fees by $9 U.S. non-members

McCarthy said that whatever the company decides to do, it will notify candidates of any planned fee increase at least 30 days in advance.

More information on Security+ can be found here.

12/5/02: Kris Benson from Prince George, BC, Canada says: sorry guys, but this price is way out of line. I hold a few CompTIA certs (A+, N+, i-Net+) and let me tell you, they're not ones that guarantee me a job. Everybody knows A+, but the others are pretty much lost on most employers -- do you honestly think a CompTIA cert is going to give you six figures? If so, you need to seriously consider comitting yourself to a mental institution. On the other hand the CCIE that was mentioned -- that should give you six figures pretty much right away. What's the difference? The CCIE is a difficult process!
12/5/02: Anonymous says: These cert fee's are getting outrageous. "ahemmm, there were more development costs involved", Oh bull pucky, your just out to wrench another $25 smackers off some poor working class person!
12/5/02: Anonymous says: inflation sucks doesn't it.
12/5/02: Dapper from Zambia, Africa says: It is so amazing that CompTIA are coming up with these incredible prices for the cert exams. Lets face it the IT bubble has burst and the high fees are not helping. I do expect them to revise this, a figure like $200 like Server+,i-net+ and network+ will be reasonable.
12/11/02: Michael Rucker from Franklin, NH says: I took the beta test for $90 and passed. My company pays 75% and I pay 25%. Why didn't any of you guys who are complaining take the test during the beta and save some money if that's the real problem?
12/11/02: Anonymous says: I have two words for all the complainers out there: TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Count the money you spend on your "habits" (drinking, smoking, shopping, cars, etc.) and weigh that amount against the cost of education and certification. I'm heavily certified, and have a year left toward my PhD in MIS. I saved on the Security+ exam by taking the beta. Stop crying, make smarter spending choices, and get on with your lives!
12/11/02: Anonymous says: Then your guys should not take the exam!
12/13/02: Moschino from Turkey says: I have Network plus.Someone can explain me, 225$ is little??????It is so expensive. All of Comptia exams are so expensive. Please review your prices.
12/13/02: Andrew from Illinois says: 225$ is about the standard price for any CompTIA exam...so what's the big deal? Certs are expensive...don't garentee a job...and most of your friends won't be able to apreciate the accomplishment. What I'm trying to say is let this be a lesson to you...if you missed the beta stop you whining and cough up the dough. I got mine...so where's yours??
12/13/02: MCSE_MASTA!!!!!!!!! says: Security plus and $3 will get you a cup of coffee. Comptia certs are VERY entry level, if you thing anyone is going to give you a job or a raise because you got this cert, then you are just the kind of sucker they are looking for. Later Tards
