Security+ Launches with $225 Exam Fee

12/4/2002 -- On Monday, CompTIA launched its latest certification, Security+. The highly-anticipated, entry-level security title comes with the highest price point for a standard, proctored CompTIA exam: $225 U.S. non-members ($175 U.S. members).

Currently, most of the organization's exams cost $199 U.S. non-member.

Chief Operating Officer Brian McCarthy told CertCities that the new price point was associated with the increased cost of development of this exam, due to factors such as the topic matter and more industry and partner involvement, including the U.S. government. "There's extra costs associated with that..." McCarthy explained. "We have to look at all our costs...and how to recover them" on an exam-by-exam basis.

He also said that although the company literature the price point is labeled as "introductory," there are no current plans to increase the cost of the exam. He said that the organization is currently reevaluating its exam pricing, as it does every year, but that it hadn't made a decision yet on whether to increase exam prices overall in 2003 -- or whether, if it does, Security+ would be included.

Last year, CompTIA raised most of its exam fees by $9 U.S. non-members

McCarthy said that whatever the company decides to do, it will notify candidates of any planned fee increase at least 30 days in advance.

1/8/03: Korenja from Phoenix, AZ says: Not a bad price for a one time cost. Look at Cisco's CCIE exam. That's $1400.00 & you can only take it in a limited number of places.
1/14/03: RJ from Laurel, MD says: Love the Security+ idea! Will be taking it as soon as the area college offers it! Yeah it costs a bit to get certified, but heck, it's a nice catch word when your resume is getting scanned amongst the thousands. Plus, for me, its a goal setter especially with all the distractions of our high paid lifestyle!!
2/9/03: Scurry from Singapore says: I am a MCSE and OCP I can tell you one thing - employer's don't give a hoot about CompTIA certifications (except for A+), and frankly $225 is way too high as an investment for career advancement. SCP seems much more reasonable. Sure, CompTIA may say it's a lifetime cert, but let's get real. At the change of pace in IT, no cert is worth the same for lifetime. Officially this cert may not expire, but it will be out of date and worthless in a couple of years anyway.
2/22/03: kevmit from Dallas says: Just took/passed the Security+ exam today with a 796. I was actually a bit surprised..I really expected to score much higher (at least in the 800's). The questions are so poorly worded and grammatically indecipherable that half your time is spent trying to figure out what the @#$* they're asking for.
