UPDATED: Cisco Releases New CCNA Exam with Hands-On Tasks

3/13/2002 -- Cisco Press announced today that Cisco's certification program has replaced CCNA exam #640-507 with a new version, #640-607, which features hands-on simulation questions.

"With this new exam, Cisco has introduced performance-based testing elements that will measure a candidate's ability to accomplish certain tasks in a time-critical setting," Cisco Press said in a press release sent out this morning. "Cisco Systems' goal is not to make the exams more difficult, but rather to present a testing environment that assesses both a candidate's practical and theoretical mastery of CCNA objectives."

The new CCNA exam still includes multiple-choice questions, but also features interactive questions which will "require cut-and-paste solutions, IP addressing input, and networking simulation comprehension," the release said. Cisco Press also said that although Cisco hasn't changed the objectives for the exam, the entire multiple-choice question pool has been replaced.

Although the press release sent yesterday said that the new version would immediately replace the old version, there does appear to be an exception: Cisco told CertCities.com today that anyone who registered for the CCNA of the exam before March 12 will still take the 507 version that they originally registered for, as long as the actual exam date is before April 23. Any new registrations for the CCNA will be for version 607, however.

Aside from Cisco's CCIE exam, which takes place in an actual lab, this new CCNA exam is the company's first to include hands-on questions. In an e-mail sent to Cisco certification candidates, the company expressed its intention of adding such interactive elements to its other exams.

In conjunction with the announcement, Cisco Press said it has released two new self-study titles, to replace its crop of 640-507 books:

  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide
  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit

A special bundle of preparation material will be available from Cisco Press in April.

CCNA, which stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate, is Cisco System's most popular entry-level certification, and requires passing one exam. The CCNA exam's last major update came in November 1999, when #640-507 was released.

Current title holders won't have to take the new exam to retain their certifications. Cisco has a policy of keeping the CCNA credential valid for three years from the time a title holder obtains it.

More information about the new exam, including a demo of the new interactive elements, can be found on Cisco's Web site (here and here).

We will continue to update this story as more details become available. Those looking for more information may also want to attend a chat about the new exam scheduled for March 27 at 4 p.m. on TCPMag.com, in which trainer Andy Barkle will answer your questions. 3/25/02: Jug from Utah says: Wow, just finished testing today. Me and another kid from my class were in the test center today to take our test AGAIN because the network crashed as stated in the previous post. Kelly, I believe the reason it crashed on us was due to the technician messing around with some cables during the test. But, I took and finished the exam today and I PASSED with a (885). My other friend also PASSED with a (910) (what a jerk hunh getting a higher score than me, heh jk. Just glad I passed) Anyways, material seemed like everything I had learned through netacad so for all those complaining about using 507 material for this exam and not being prepared. I used the 507 material all year long. Anyways, I had 2 simulator questions and like 6 subnetting for me. Had about 4 Vlan questions, and so on. There are 2 more in the room as I speak, hopefully they will also pass. I will let ya know how that goes as soon as they are done.
3/25/02: Bobby Zulkarnain,Geodetic Eng,MCP,CCNA,CCDA from Bandung, West Java, Indonesia says: Well, It could be a better step from cisco system to emphasize hands on elements for CCNA candidate, I think it is important to produce CCNAs more qualified person in the future.
3/25/02: Bobby Zulkarnain,Geodetic Eng,MCP,CCNA,CCDA from Bandung, West Java, Indonesia says: I think CCNA exam 640-507 too text book and poor of skill, It would be a better step to refining the exam become a new version which have simulations hands on lab elemets
3/26/02: Randy from Plano, Texas says: I do find it rather amusing to read this kind of stuff. I just wish you guys could see yourself complaining about Cisco's Certs just because it means you have to put forth a little effort. I busted my butt 2 years ago to get the CCNA and then the CCNP. I have been procrastinating since then about the CCIE which I am actively pursuing now. Each of you needs to take a minute and take a look at Microsofts MCSE. There are over 260,000 active MCSE's. There are still under 10,000 CCIE's, under 20,000 CCNP's, and under 50,000 CCNA's. Personally, I would recommend a hands-on lab as well as a written exam for the CCNA and CCNP. That would at least get rid of the book-reading jerks out there that made the MCSE worthless to managers and the job market. Cisco is doing the right thing. If you can't handle the requirements of the industry and Cisco, GET OUT!!!!!!!
3/26/02: Thi Nguyen from Australia says: I booked the exam (604-507)on the 12/3 and ready for the test scheduled on 26/3. What happened ?they told me the system is not ready for test and rebook me for 604-607 ? Go Cisco - Go
3/27/02: brent from SanDiego says: Wow. I just took the exam and passed. It wasn't too bad. I was really nervous after reading all of these comments. I was lucky enough to use training from TestOut and as part of their course they have this LabSim thing that is very similar to the new exam. I would recommend it. Anyway I passed.
3/27/02: Tom from Boston says: I just took the test and scored a 650. I cant say Im too suprised as I was one of those guys studying more to past the test than to the learn the material. Having said that, can someone recommend study materials for me so that I can learn the material and pass the test. I used the Cisco Press (Wendel Odem) cert guide and always scored above an 80%, but with the change in format taking past tests did not help much. Any recommendations on study materials for the simulations and other test questions would be appreciated (besides just getting on router). -Tom
3/27/02: Becky Nagel from Web Editor, CertCities.com says: Hi Jug -- Congrats! Thanks for coming back and posting your experience -- Becky
3/27/02: Andy from Oregon says: I wouldn't think the content would be different from the 507 to the 607 - just some "hands-on" as mentioned. If you studied for the 507 do you think the 607 is that different?
4/2/02: Tom from Boston says: I think after the ICND book is excellent for a lot of the questions--- the best book I've seen. If you read this book you shouldn't have much of a problem passing the test. I wish I studied with the ICND book. The content really isnt different. I just need to have someone recommend something to use for the sims. Anyone? -Tom
