UPDATED: Cisco Releases New CCNA Exam with Hands-On Tasks

3/13/2002 -- Cisco Press announced today that Cisco's certification program has replaced CCNA exam #640-507 with a new version, #640-607, which features hands-on simulation questions.

"With this new exam, Cisco has introduced performance-based testing elements that will measure a candidate's ability to accomplish certain tasks in a time-critical setting," Cisco Press said in a press release sent out this morning. "Cisco Systems' goal is not to make the exams more difficult, but rather to present a testing environment that assesses both a candidate's practical and theoretical mastery of CCNA objectives."

The new CCNA exam still includes multiple-choice questions, but also features interactive questions which will "require cut-and-paste solutions, IP addressing input, and networking simulation comprehension," the release said. Cisco Press also said that although Cisco hasn't changed the objectives for the exam, the entire multiple-choice question pool has been replaced.

Although the press release sent yesterday said that the new version would immediately replace the old version, there does appear to be an exception: Cisco told CertCities.com today that anyone who registered for the CCNA of the exam before March 12 will still take the 507 version that they originally registered for, as long as the actual exam date is before April 23. Any new registrations for the CCNA will be for version 607, however.

Aside from Cisco's CCIE exam, which takes place in an actual lab, this new CCNA exam is the company's first to include hands-on questions. In an e-mail sent to Cisco certification candidates, the company expressed its intention of adding such interactive elements to its other exams.

In conjunction with the announcement, Cisco Press said it has released two new self-study titles, to replace its crop of 640-507 books:

  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide
  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit

A special bundle of preparation material will be available from Cisco Press in April.

CCNA, which stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate, is Cisco System's most popular entry-level certification, and requires passing one exam. The CCNA exam's last major update came in November 1999, when #640-507 was released.

Current title holders won't have to take the new exam to retain their certifications. Cisco has a policy of keeping the CCNA credential valid for three years from the time a title holder obtains it.

More information about the new exam, including a demo of the new interactive elements, can be found on Cisco's Web site (here and here).

We will continue to update this story as more details become available. Those looking for more information may also want to attend a chat about the new exam scheduled for March 27 at 4 p.m. on TCPMag.com, in which trainer Andy Barkle will answer your questions. 4/3/02: Jared from Phoenix says: Just took the 607 today after taking a 2 week boot camp and studying for the 507 for a month. The material has changed in a big way. You will not pass the 607 using 507 material no matter how much effort you put in. I consistantly scored 90% or higher on all of my boson test exams. The question types in the 607 are very different. Just a heads up if your thinking about taking this thing using 507 study material. Scored 749
4/3/02: Caught out there in NY says: Jared from Phoenix is 200% correct.i have hands on experiece and studied like hell for the 507. i took the 607 2 days after its release and scored in the low 700's. there was a decent amount of ipx and hexidecimal questions that pissed me off and some good simulators. the 607 study guides should be out in mid april
4/8/02: Tom from Boston says: Can someone recommend good sim training material??? I took the test and got a whopping 650, but after looking at the ICND book which i never looked at before i think ill pass as long as I can get the sims.
4/18/02: Ian from England says: I paid for a Cisco course - Mid March myself and had to take holiday to undertake the course. Having been in IT for 15 years you get used to sometimes financing your own development. Had hope to sit exam this month but now ???. The centre running course were not aware of the new changes so now need to purchase simulation software as well. I am in agreement regarding needing to have real world experience rather than just theory and multiple choice questions but a) more notice should have been given (could have delayed course until new material was available) also b) perhaps Cisco should review pass mark required ?
5/9/02: Lin from New England says: The Cisco site does explain that the 640-507 and 607 objectives are the same. However, I just read on a forum that there is a new Cisco IOS, which has different commands, and that we should know both. Anyone know about this - I'm just starting. The commands I've learned so far are for the old IOS. Cisco's site is no help at all on this. Anyone know anything??
5/10/02: Becky Nagel from Web Editor, CertCities.com says: Lin -- we'll look into this and post anything we find out here. -- Becky
5/14/02: Dan from Illinois says: I took the test on 5-13, got a 790. I was in a CISCO Networking Academy at a local junior college with 18 people in it total. So far 9 of us have taken it and only 1 has passed and he has 10 years experience in the computer industry and hands on experience. The 607 didn't look anything like the chapter tests or the 'final' tests that we took in the class. I don't think that you can only hit certain areas, you have to know something about everything. All of us that have taken it have done the worst on the 'Cisco & Networking Basics' part, at least that is what our feedback paper told us. I used Self Test Software and hammered. I was getting consistent 90 to 100% every time! The Cisco Flashcard for 607 is a joke. It has so many errors it is not funny. Good luck to everybody who takes it. You will need it. Thanks
5/15/02: Tom from Boston says: I took it again. Scored a 790. Closer, but damn- pretty tough test. If anyone has a chance to get a hold of the sybex virtual e-trainer-- that helped me at least increase my score from a 650. Its certainly passable. I have no experience configuring routers and am not a good test taker. Third times a charm. We'll see.
6/6/02: Tom from Boston says: I finally passed this thing. Took it 5 times. On my 3rd time I got an 847. Fourth time- actually went down to an 810. Got a 911 yesterday. Never took any classes and dont have much experience with routers, but after seeing the test 4 times anyone should pass.
6/16/02: Anonymous says: I did the CCNA 640-607 test successfully, but I have to say that anyone planning to do this exam has got to be very well prepared. In my opinion, passing this test really proves that you have good knowledge that of the tested subjects, but more than that, you need to be very alert mentally. You have to be able to think logically. For these reasons, I have great respect for this certification. Good Luck to everyone planning to take this exam.
