UPDATED: Cisco Releases New CCNA Exam with Hands-On Tasks

3/13/2002 -- Cisco Press announced today that Cisco's certification program has replaced CCNA exam #640-507 with a new version, #640-607, which features hands-on simulation questions.

"With this new exam, Cisco has introduced performance-based testing elements that will measure a candidate's ability to accomplish certain tasks in a time-critical setting," Cisco Press said in a press release sent out this morning. "Cisco Systems' goal is not to make the exams more difficult, but rather to present a testing environment that assesses both a candidate's practical and theoretical mastery of CCNA objectives."

The new CCNA exam still includes multiple-choice questions, but also features interactive questions which will "require cut-and-paste solutions, IP addressing input, and networking simulation comprehension," the release said. Cisco Press also said that although Cisco hasn't changed the objectives for the exam, the entire multiple-choice question pool has been replaced.

Although the press release sent yesterday said that the new version would immediately replace the old version, there does appear to be an exception: Cisco told CertCities.com today that anyone who registered for the CCNA of the exam before March 12 will still take the 507 version that they originally registered for, as long as the actual exam date is before April 23. Any new registrations for the CCNA will be for version 607, however.

Aside from Cisco's CCIE exam, which takes place in an actual lab, this new CCNA exam is the company's first to include hands-on questions. In an e-mail sent to Cisco certification candidates, the company expressed its intention of adding such interactive elements to its other exams.

In conjunction with the announcement, Cisco Press said it has released two new self-study titles, to replace its crop of 640-507 books:

  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide
  • Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit

A special bundle of preparation material will be available from Cisco Press in April.

CCNA, which stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate, is Cisco System's most popular entry-level certification, and requires passing one exam. The CCNA exam's last major update came in November 1999, when #640-507 was released.

Current title holders won't have to take the new exam to retain their certifications. Cisco has a policy of keeping the CCNA credential valid for three years from the time a title holder obtains it.

More information about the new exam, including a demo of the new interactive elements, can be found on Cisco's Web site (here and here).

We will continue to update this story as more details become available. Those looking for more information may also want to attend a chat about the new exam scheduled for March 27 at 4 p.m. on TCPMag.com, in which trainer Andy Barkle will answer your questions. More information on this chat can be found here. -B.N.

3/21/02: Jeff says: I have news for all of you. I just took the new test. Studied my brains out. The new test is terrible and very hard. I have taken tests in the past from Microsoft and never failed. The new test is nothing like the old one. The will be alot of people failing this. It is not just cut and past. Trust me. Not too pleased with Cisco right now.
3/21/02: Becky Nagel from Web Editor, CertCities.com says: Good Luck Jug -- Do let us know how it goes!
3/22/02: Anonymous says: As I said before (I was deleted): F*ck f*ck f*ck f*ck f*ck! Why does Cisco keep f*cking me? [Editor's Note -- Hey Anonymous, not deleted, just edited, as above, so we don't get blocked by filters. -- Becky Nagel, Web Editor, CertCities.com]
3/22/02: Nader from Egypt says: I think a failure in the new exam, means a failure in the old one, better off, if you fail more than once you should never try it again ... I'm already MCSE and CCNA and 8 years experience in networking, and if certs were more recognised here in Egypt, I probably would have been CCNP by now, Good move Cisco ...
3/22/02: Jeremy from Delaware says: Advance notice would've been nice, but since the objectives havn't changed then it isn't to big of a deal. The bottom line is KNOW THE MATERIAL and you will pass. Taking my test (607) 3/27.
3/22/02: Becky Nagel from Web Editor, CertCities.com says: EXAM REVIEW POSTED!: Hey all, just so you know, our sister site TCPMag.com just posted a review of the 607 exam. It will posted here on CertCities.com in a couple of weeks, but in case you don't want to wait, you can access it at: www.tcpmag.com/column.asp?id=EXAM&cid=152
3/23/02: Akashdeep Agarwal from Bahadurgarh(haryana) India says: That is the nature of Computers. Things change - Fast and without warning. Get used to it or get out of the industry It will make the certification more valueable as well as the certified person Practical aspects certainly enhances one's knowledge
3/23/02: Jug from Utah says: Sorry I havent posted back yet. I went into test center and was taking exam for 20 min, when the network crapped out and I got some errors on the test. So they rescheduled me for Monday. So far on the exam I got 50 questions with 70 min to take. The questions I got were nothing new from the objectives that you should know. Simulation wasn't as bad as it is said to be, it is just like the eSim that Cisco puts out for netacad, except minus the help command. I'll post more info after I complete the exam. Wish me luck.
3/24/02: Tom from Boston says: I'm scheduled for 607 on March 27th. I've been studying using 507 materials and taking old practice tests (I suppose the test wont be terribly helpful now). Anyhow, Ill let you all know how I did. -Tom
3/25/02: Kelly from Chicago says: Jug - which service were you using for testing? VUE or Prometric? Just curious. There seems to be a lot of problems with the delivery of this test.
