Oracle Beta Dates Announced
8/15/2001 -- Oracle has announced the dates for its upcoming 9i beta exams.
According to the Oracle Web site, the following 9i exams will be available at these times:

There are no Backup and Recovery topics covered by any of the exams. Becoming Oracle certified without being tested on Backup and Recovery seems more like a bad joke and will have a negative effect on the value of the DBA cert. |

Ok, you are right, the Backup and Recovery topics are combined with Network Administration (very strange combination anyway) so this will certainly reduce the B&R number of questions to half. It's not a good thing that there is no separate B&R test anymore. After all, Backup and Recovery is a big and critical part of any DBA's life. If you'll lose your data, you'll certainly loose your job... |

You will find that Backup and Recovery, fault tolerance and redundancy, and many of the recoverability issues for Oracle are in fact covered a bit by each of the exams. I preferred the old separate B&R exam myself, but what Oracle is apparently doing is ensuring that this topic is in the mind of admins when it comes to configuration, performance tuning, as well as backup topics. |

Adrian, you can still take the 'OCP Oracle8i Backup & Recovery Exam' and the rest of the 4 OCP 8i DBA exams first, and go for the 'Upgrade to 9i' exam later to get your full OCP 9i DBA certification. I would say the OCP exams serve as an excellent foundation. No matter how may questions are asked in the actual exams, one still needs to study *everything* in order to pass them. The questions tend to be tricky, and really test the in-depth knowledge of the OCP candidate. I think any Oracle DBA, or Application Developer worth their salt should go for the OCP exams. Even experienced DBAs, and Application Developers learn a whole lot when they are preparing for the OCP exams. :) Just my 2 cents worth of thoughts. :) Whadaya think? :) |

Well, I was not talking about my choices. I am already OCP 8 DBA, so I've cleared a full B&R exam. Right now I am studying for the 8i Upgrade and after this one I'll go for the 9i Upgrade. It's the logical path for me. I am just feeling that the new 9i track is not enough B&R oriented compared to the previous ones. As for the last part of your post: yes, you are absolutely right. To quote you, 'any Oracle DBA, or Application Developer worth their salt should go for the OCP exams'. Nothing to add to this! |

If you haven't taken any exams yet. Is it advisable to take 8i which means more exams too plus upgrade later on or take the beta exams or wait for it to go into production. Problem with taking the beta exams is there are no materials on it yet,time to prepare is short and you wait a long time for the results. When will 9i exams go into production. Is it worth the wait and for the mean time take other vendoe exams first. |
