CompTIA Relaunching Gartner Certs April 2

3/30/2001 -- On April 2, the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) will relaunch two certifications it bought from the Gartner Group in February.

According to Fran Linhart, director of certification for CompTIA and a former Gartner certification manager, the name of the certifications have been changed -- "Project Management" is now "IT Project+," and "e-Business Fundamentals" is now "e-Biz+" -- however, the objectives remain the same.

-- advertisement (story continued below) --

IT Project+ is "designed for IT professionals with 12 months of experience in leading, managing and directing small IT projects. IT Project+ examines the business, interpersonal and technical skills required to successfully manage IT projects, as defined by experts in the industry," according to the CompTIA Web site.

e-Biz+ is "designed for technical and non-technical individuals who work in an e-Business environment. The exam measures a baseline of knowledge around the basic concepts, key issues and critical technologies of e-Business, supplying IT and business professionals with a foundation for contributing to e-Business solutions."

Linhart said that these two titles compliment CompTIA's current crop of certifications well. She explained that for those who first get the organization's A+, Network+ and/or other certifications, these new offerings are a logical next step. "Odds are, as you [move up in IT], you will do more and more project management. You need to be held accountable for the business side and the people knowledge that surround [such projects]."

Those already certified in the now-defunct Gartner versions will automatically be grandfathered into the new titles. To request a new certificate and a CompTIA I.D. card, call (630) 268-1818.

Like CompTIA's other certifications, IT Project+ and e-Biz+ are obtained by passing one multiple-choice exam, available through Vue and Prometric. Following is the basic outline for each:

Name of Exam IT Project+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 85
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code PK0-001
Languages English

Name of Exam e-Biz+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 60
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code EK0-001
Languages English

Further details on the certifications can be found on the CompTIA Web site. For e-Biz+, click here. For IT Project+, click here. -B.N.

7/5/01: Gehan says: I can't believe all this bickering! You people seem to be missing the point. The A+ course teaches you the skills you need to get the job done. The test is there to validate your expertise in the subject. No one can fault CompTIA for making money, 'cos what they teach you can be applied to real world situations. It's upto you to comprehend the subject matter and apply it as you see fit when the need arises. So even if you can't pass the exam 'cos your memory retention is low, try to read and understand the fundamentals of PC hardware and OS's, and you still may have a career in the IT field, by using that knowledge in a working environment! Nothing beats experience. I have also found that you need a fairly good understanding of the English language to pass the tests, as most of the questions can be quite misleading if your comprehension & understanding of english grammar and syntax is not upto the mark. Good luck, and remember sometimes the blame can lie within...
7/7/01: Jay says: With no dates on these posts I'm not sure how old some of them are (for the record this was written on Jul 7 2001), but I wanted to respond to a couple. Anyway, I passed the i-Net+ exam today, and it was my second try. I am in all honesty trying to help individuals with complaints about silly questions, not slam or talk down to them. In 1994 I owned the first ISP offering web access in my city. I've also worked as a webmaster, Internet consultant, and have been a Web Application Developer at big sites like Ameritrade. So when I was looking at taking some cert tests (most specifically MCSE and MCSD) I wanted to test the waters a bit and get a certification I should have "Absolutely No Trouble Passing". With only a brief review of the course objectives, I proudly went into Sylvan Prometric to get what was mine by right, and left with a 54%. Like a lot of you my first reaction was, "Man those questions were f**ked up! What a sh*ty test." When I went to take it this time, I spent considerably more time in preparing. I found that the biggest problem I faced was my own arrogance. I figured that I knew it all. And that got me into trouble when I faced questions that required a solution different than the one I would use. An example might be, just because you use your proxy server as both a proxy and a firewall don't assume added security is a function of a proxy server in an answer looking for just proxy functions. If it asks what's wrong with this HTML code and it's all lowercase, and you always use all uppercase, still look at the syntax, don't just leap at what you think is the obvious answer. It may sound harsh, but they are testing you for what they want for an answer not what you think it should be. You may never recommend ISDN to a client but if a question gives you a scenario and asks if you should, answer yes if there is a selection that meets all the criteria of the question. After you have the certification, do things the way that works best for you and your clients/employers, and screw what CompTIA thinks is right. And remember there is always more than one way to do something, you just have to know which one they want, right or wrong. By the way, this advice came directly from a University instructor of mine giving a pep talk to an MCSE fasttrack class after nearly half of them failed the Networking Essentials cert test because of "stupid questions". So it's not just CompTIA that seems to have this situation. I hope this helps relieve some stress, and good luck. Jay i-Net+ Certified P.S. Jimmy Anonymous, I bought 2 different sets of books and found i-Net+ Certification Study guide published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill and it's companion practice tests to be the better set. It was VERY helpful. They are in depth, to the point they give you more information than you need. Without violating my NDA let's just say that the practice test questions from those books were so in depth and difficult that when I took the cert test I had no stress about the questions. Read into that what you want. Also the example questions I used above were taken from the study guides NOT my cert test.
7/8/01: Jimmy says: Thank you so much for your comment JAY I will go look for that book you told me. Anybody with any comment about i-Net+ please also email me at [email protected] Well lately Im also thinking of getting those i-Net+ video tapes from KEYSTONE or LearnCenter which they sell for $400 a set of 4-5 tapes. Well is it worth it ? Useful?
7/9/01: TOM says: Any body know that Iam an A+ cert holder so am I consider compTIA member ? and am I only have to pay the discount $140 instead of $190 for i-Net+ exam ??????
7/11/01: RAJA ZAHID says: NO
7/11/01: Sickboy says: the Inet+ exam was a tricky one for me. As the person stated above, the Osborne/McGraw-Hill Inet+ study guide was decent, but I would also recommend getting the Boson Inet+ quizzer. It's relatively cheap and very usefull. With those 2 tools, you should be able to pass. Not sure what the addy is for Boson, but a quick search on yahoo for Boson exams should find it. Cheers Sickboy CNE,A+, Network+, Inet+
7/11/01: BLT says: Are you people really that STUPID? I mean, come on...A+ hard?!? You must be kidding. that was the simplest test I ever took. You who think the A+ test was hard are going to have a really hard time getting by in life. It amazes me that you find your way home at night!
7/13/01: Brain says: You need to Shut Up "BLT", dont call other stupid and I dont see how smart you are. If you wanna play smart, lets come out and meet, compare of the exam scores. Im currently holding MCP+I, CIW, i-Net+, MCDBA, CCNP, CCSE and SSCP. Im working at Check Point doing Security Enginner work in S.F. I give u my I.P and if you can come break into my Security Firewall setting up by me. Then you consider smart. You better watch your mouth and dont call other stupid. Everybody have their level of skills. They are just trying to learn the entry level A+. Everybody been thru that step didnt you ????????
7/16/01: Mathman says: I want to get into the IT world. Is A+ for me? I just want something that I can get a decent summer job until I recieve me PHD. I have done some computer science but this was a university course.
7/16/01: Stewart says: I see a lot of whining in these posts, most appear to be from folk who either didn't prepare for their test or who underestimated the exam. I prepped for the A+ by taking one of the simulations until I could answer the entire core test bank in 30 min with 90+% accuracy. I thought that a fairly good guage (result 3 wrong on core). If you study and have some experience with your hands in the gear, you can pass.
