CompTIA Relaunching Gartner Certs April 2

3/30/2001 -- On April 2, the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) will relaunch two certifications it bought from the Gartner Group in February.

According to Fran Linhart, director of certification for CompTIA and a former Gartner certification manager, the name of the certifications have been changed -- "Project Management" is now "IT Project+," and "e-Business Fundamentals" is now "e-Biz+" -- however, the objectives remain the same.

IT Project+ is "designed for IT professionals with 12 months of experience in leading, managing and directing small IT projects. IT Project+ examines the business, interpersonal and technical skills required to successfully manage IT projects, as defined by experts in the industry," according to the CompTIA Web site.

e-Biz+ is "designed for technical and non-technical individuals who work in an e-Business environment. The exam measures a baseline of knowledge around the basic concepts, key issues and critical technologies of e-Business, supplying IT and business professionals with a foundation for contributing to e-Business solutions."

Linhart said that these two titles compliment CompTIA's current crop of certifications well. She explained that for those who first get the organization's A+, Network+ and/or other certifications, these new offerings are a logical next step. "Odds are, as you [move up in IT], you will do more and more project management. You need to be held accountable for the business side and the people knowledge that surround [such projects]."

Those already certified in the now-defunct Gartner versions will automatically be grandfathered into the new titles. To request a new certificate and a CompTIA I.D. card, call (630) 268-1818.

Like CompTIA's other certifications, IT Project+ and e-Biz+ are obtained by passing one multiple-choice exam, available through Vue and Prometric. Following is the basic outline for each:

Name of Exam IT Project+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 85
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code PK0-001
Languages English

Name of Exam e-Biz+
Cost $140 CompTIA members, $190 non-members
Number of Questions 60
Time Limit 2 Hours
Exam Code EK0-001
Languages English

Further details on the certifications can be found on the CompTIA Web site. For e-Biz+, click here. For IT Project+, click here. -B.N.

5/26/01: A+ certified says: if you cant pass the o/s and core exams in the time they give you should go back to school or think about a different career it very basic stuff the few "stupid questions in the exam" should not make you fail if you get them wrong... every time you take a mcse exam you pay pass or fail dont bash comptia for the way they do things
5/29/01: Asim says: I passed both of my A+ exams but i havn't got my certificate yet. First there were two certificates but now Is this a new rule that they send only one certificate of both papers???
5/29/01: Thor says: I thought I was ready for the A+ core test and failed it by 10 points. I was puzzeled on where alot of the questions were coming from ? I went back and studied my book inside and out. I took many pre-tests and lots of lab time. I have built a PC from scratch and it was a nice job. I re took the test and only passed it by 60 points ? Their were questions that I still had no idea. Some were in depth more than the training and study information intailed and some were questions that should have been on the operating systems test that I am studying for now. You should re examine the questions and match them to the training materials to make sure that they equal each other. I will be more prepaired for the unexpected on this next test.....

6/7/01: Alvaro says: I took the A+ core with the 2001 objectives and passed it with and 81.4% it was pretty easy i just hope the os part is just as easy although i heard its pretty hard does anyone know????
