UPDATED: CompTIA Releases New Server+ Objectives; Reviewing Network+

3/24/2004 -- On March 9 the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) posted the objectives for the upcoming revision of its Server+ certification exam.

Server+ is a one-exam title that certifies candidates' skills on a variety of vendor-neutral server technologies. CompTIA announced in February that it would be updating the exam this year.

The new objectives can be downloaded in PDF format here. The revised objectives contain a new category -- General Server Hardware Knowledge -- that encompasses 30 percent of the material covered. It includes 15 sub-objective items covering knowledge of various system architectures, server types and technologies like ATA, SCSI and clustering. The exam will continue to be 90 minutes long.

Michael Johnson, CompTIA's Server+ program manager, said the following regarding the objective changes: "For the most part the exam topic areas are unchanged but the details within the objectives have been updated for new technologies and also are grouped differently based on feedback from a SME Survey and focus group meeting held during the development of the objectives," he explained. "General Server Hardware Knowledge is an example of the reorganization."

When asked for details on what specific technologies have been added, Johnson said that information would most likely be released when the beta is introduced, sometime in Q2. According to Johnson, a separate beta exam will be released to test the new questions, instead of seeding unscored questions onto the current version of the exam, as was done with the recent A+ beta.

The final version of the exam is expected to go live in "Q4."

In other CompTIA news, the organization will be holding a subject matter expert (SME) meeting next month to evaluate its Network+ exam.

Depending on what is found during this evaluation, the exam may be upgraded, a spokesperson told CertCities.com. "We really won't know until the results are validated," she said.

The evaluation is expected to be completed by Q3 of this year.

The current Network+ exam was released in January 2002.

Those interested in becoming a Network+ SME can get more information here. -Becky Nagel

3/24/04: Anonymous says: Ladies and Gents, here's another one from poop+. Hurry up and take them all, get the papers and cover your wall...hoorraayy!!
3/25/04: Anonymous says: Tha above poster is just bitter because it his 17th time taking the A plus exam, and he still can't pass it....so he has wallpapered his room with the score reports which summarize all of his weaknesses...hey whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Way to go buddy, your a role model for the rest of us.
3/25/04: Anonymous says: hahaha you know what?! You're a total shame if you even once failed any of the poop+, let alone 17 times. Well, you can imagine that one could fail it 17 times because maybe you already did, at least half of the number eh? And afterall, they're not even worth the fee that you paid, they're only a requirement for admin job that doesn't give you any plus point for having it but will shoot in the back you if you don't have it. So take them for their papers can decorate your wall but don't waste your resources to fail them even once. Pass them and move on to higher and more worthy certs.
3/25/04: Anonymous says: Sir when you are done ranting...that will be $259 for your next attempt at the A plus...Sir we have a frequent failer program which will provide you with a 3.414% discount, we have also nominated you for inclusion into our hall of fame, that is provided you fail your eighteeth attempt. Good Luck Sir...
3/25/04: Anonymous says: Awwww grow up guys and act your ages NOT your shoe sizes!!!
3/25/04: Anonymous says: My shoe size is 219...which ironically correspond with my IQ...P.S. My shoe size is 37, and I passed the A plus 1st try....
3/26/04: Anonymous says: It's not even worth failing any CompTIA once. Take it and pass it, or else, forget it. There are better ones out there for your sweat.
3/26/04: Anonymous says: Are you kidding offering someone to take this kind of exam the eighteenth time? Oh maybe because you did, like ten times? I don't think there's someone that dumb to fail it that many times or even dumber to keep retaking it for $200 each. I passed it at the first try just like everyone else does AND SHOULD, and wouldn't even think of trying the second time if I failed unless it was required for my job which wasn't the case for me, thank God it wasn't, it's just worthless afterall.
3/26/04: Leroy Joseph, Jr. from Houston, TX says: Get a "LIFE" people. CompTIA Certifications are a stepping stone for most people, (Like my self - 62 major certifications -http://www.certmag.com/articles/anmviewer.asp?a=324) for those in doubt. Now has I was saying - CompTIA certifications is and will continue to be a stepping stone for the more "premier" certs, ergo Novell, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard accepts and/or requires CompTIA certs within their Certification program. Point-in-case in order to become a Master CNE for Novell your will need to have passed CompTIA's "IT Project(plus)" exam. Microsoft allows the A(plus) in combination with either the Network(plus) or Server(plus) for the electives within it's MCSA certification and HP (Compaq) requires the A(plus), Network(plus), and Server(plus0 for it's APS certifications. I will agree that CompTIA's exam fees are a little steep given the norm of other exam fees. (Trust me on this one.) CompTIA's will remain a focus for those individual's that are looking to gain the "Entry Level" cert's and then move on to some of the bigger player in the arena. I say to those that have failed a CompTIA test. Study harder and longer and be better prepared for the next attempt. PS. No I passed all of my CompTia and other exams on the first attempt. Novell is a different story acheiving my 5 (five) MCNE's.
3/27/04: Anonymous says: Very well said, it should cover everything that has been discussed above the post.
