More Details Released About New Network+ Exam, Due Jan. 31

1/23/2002 -- The new version of CompTIA's Network+ exam is scheduled to debut in just eight days.

As we reported here in November, CompTIA will release an updated version of Network+ on Jan. 31. The old version will retire on March 14, giving candidates a grace period in which they can choose which version to take.

This is the first upgrade Network+ has gone through since its debut in 1999. We recently talked with Tancy Stanbury, program manager for Network+, to get more details on the upcoming version.

Stanbury characterized the new exam as a "minor upgrade." The exam will emphasize troubleshooting, she said, and will cover a few more subject matters, including Linux and AppleTalk. "Before, we had no mention of Linux [or Apple],' she explained."[But] as a vendor-neutral program, we try very stringently to cover all platforms."

The exam also will contain revised question types. "Half of the exam is now scenario-based questions," she told us.

CompTIA has also changed its recommended experience level for the exam. Before, CompTIA asked candidates to have 18 to 24 months of general IT experience. Now, the company asks candidates to have nine to 18 months of networking-specific experience.

The new exam will consist of 72 questions with a 90-minute time limit. The scoring will be based on a 100 to 900 scale, with 646 as a minimum passing score. The new exam number will be N10-002.

Stanbury said that several study guides aimed at the new version have already been released.

Note that the upgrade will not affect those who have already passed the Network+ exam, since CompTIA doesn't require recertification.

1/24/02: Thomas Osagie Okogun from Nigeria says: The Upgrade is OKAY but they should equally release Study materials that covers the changes(particularly for locations outside the U.S.A). I am presently preparing for the exam with 1999 syllabus
1/24/02: David from New Orleans, LA says: The CompTIA Network+ is not that difficult. I personally didn't use Network+ specific study materials. Any networking study materials will prepare you for this test. Of course real experience will do wonders also...
1/25/02: EZEKIEL MOGAMISI from GABORONE says: I will like to take this opportunity to appreciate the update vyou have given concerning N. To ask you just one quetion;is the old sylbus still valid?Thank you
1/25/02: Carl D. McConnell from Houston, TX says: I took and passed the new Network Plus Beta exam that was offered in 2001. I thought the test was difficult but fair. Lots of senario type questions that, like Microsoft tests, seemed to be a little wordy. For those studying the 1999 material...you still have a couple of months to take the old test...Study hard and get it under your belt.
1/28/02: Leo from Brazil says: What about those who are already Network+ certified? Will have to retake the exam?
1/28/02: Becky Nagel from CertCities.com says: Hi everyone. Just wanted to answer your questions posted here. Ezekieil: The old syllabus is only valid for the old exam, which is retiring, as stated above, March 14. Although CompTIA describes the new exam as a "minor update" you should still download the new objectives (aka syllabus) from the link above in the story. Leo -- Nope! You're certified for life; you do not need to retake the exam, unless CompTIA changes its policy (very doubtful, at least in the near future). -- Becky Nagel, Web Editor, CertCities.com, [email protected]
1/28/02: Rogelio Ofarril from San Juan, PR says: Took the beta and passed it. I found the test a little difficult with some surprises, since I had no idea thst several Unix, Appletalk and xDSL questions would be there. THose were not covered in my study materials. However work experience filled the gap.
1/31/02: Dapo Ogundeji from Nigeria says: The grace period is quite short. There can be a period in which the two exams are concurrently be administered. I am hoping to do the old one since most of the materials avaliable are for it. There will be a while before materials are abundant for the new exam
5/15/02: Anonymous says: Can Someone answer a quick question, do we still need and 82% to pass?
6/4/02: r from dublin says: POST REMOVED: R, we don't allow solicitation of braindumps on our site. If you have any questions regarding our posting policy, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] -- Becky Nagel, Web Editor, CertCities.com
