CompTIA Sues Overseas 'Braindumper'

8/6/2003 -- According to court records, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is currently pursuing a copyright infringement case against CheatExams.com, a Web site that sells " real exam questions." The site's URL is registered to Adarsha Computers, which lists an address and phone number in Denmark.

CompTIA has pursued legal action against U.S. based braindump sites several times over the past few years, including a case in 2000 against the then-Texas based Troy Tech (click here, here and here for past coverage of this site) and another in 2001 against Cheet-Sheets. However, this appears to to be the first such suit filed against an overseas braindumper.

The civil copyright suit was originally filed in February in the U.S. District Court of Connecticut against a U.S.-based defendant named George Jennings. At the time, whois listed Jennings as the registrant for the URL.

Adarsha Computers, the current registrant, was added as a codefendant in May.

According to the case docket, neither defendant responded to the case, and CompTIA has asked the judge to grant it a summary judgment.

CertCities.com attempted to reach Adarsha Computers using the Denmark phone number listed, but received an out of service error. The e-mail address bounced. We also attempted to reach the site owners through the contact information given on CheatExams.com, but received no response. We were unable to verify the existence of Jennings.

According to AIRN.org, the IP address registered to the site is hosted in India. CertCities.com located an Adarsha Computer in India, but was unable to communicate with the company to find out if it has a connection to CheatExams.com. Adarsha appears to be a common naming convention for businesses and educational institutions in the country.

A spokesperson for CompTIA said that the organization could not respond to our request for comment by press time, but may be prepared to make a statement about the case shortly.

CertCities.com will bring you more information on this story as it becomes available. -Becky Nagel

8/11/03: Missleading ? from NC says: I have taken several exams and passed without any cheats, however because of the rumers about the security test i checked out the braindumps to see what was on the them before spending $235.00 for a test! I have programed alot of different firewalls for 3 years for dozens of customers and i was shocked to see some of the questions on that test.I hate to admit it but i failed it only by about 1 or 2 questions but that was all it takes. If over pricing and testing on Comptias opions are their goals then i hope they spend millions on this laws suite and gain nothing.
8/11/03: JosephW from Kansas City says: This is about time. I usually take most tests while they are still in beta (long before the dumps are available). You either know the stuff or you don't! I understand that most people need decent material to study in order to pass. But they still study. To be given all the questions with the answers just cheapens the cert that the rest of us EARNED! Some of these tests are a bear, but they usually map to the experience tested. I've known MCSEs that can't install Windows. That person will leave a negative impression with employers that will reflect on us that have truly learned the material. When people get certified with dumps, all they do is dump the value of the cert. The tech recession isn't the only thing that has dropped IT salaries, it is those that have no clue and are in the market. CompTIA has taken on the big boys of cheating before, and now they are going after the source for dozens of sites. They are to be commended for doing the work that M$ and Cisco won't.
8/12/03: Anonymous says: i like how we can post ligitimate stuff on this site and the "almighty" becky (i probably don't really work in any real IT capacity) nagel deletes our posts! if you want people to visit this site then allow our opinions to be aired...i didn't use cursing and you deleted my post anyways??? (EDTIOR'S NOTE: According to what I hear from most readers, I don't delete nearly as much as I should. If you think I deleted something in error, e-mail me at [email protected] and let me know)
8/12/03: Anonymous says: Here is what I think is quite funny. CompTIA makes a living building tests on stuff that others develop, maintain, and work on daily. Then, they have the audacity to get upset when someone does the same thing back to them! You may disagree, but what exactly is CompTIA providing? At least Microsoft and CISCO actually produce a product and allow you to certify on those products. CompTIA develops NOTHING!!! It's all open market information and if someone capitalizes making tests out of generic stuff, then there is no harm in me or anyone else providing information to help others pass these tests. It's not like CompTIA provides study materials for there tests. On everyone of their tests you're stuck with third party study materials and the majority of those materials come nowhere close to teaching you what CompTIA really wants you to know for their sacred tests. CompTIA is a joke and will continue to be until they develop their own training materials based on their test blue prints. Ow, and developing a useable product would be nice. I'm sure there aren't too many $70k NetworkPlus holders out there!!!
8/14/03: I am Canadian says: Ok, first of all, they need to hire a f***'n english major with all the grammar and spelling error in all Comptia exams. drink Molson, and you are automatically canadian.and smart too....hehe. I AM CANADIAN
8/15/03: Anonymous says: I'm recently done my A+ exams and found them just to easy, I can understand now when I have gone for 5 jobs and said I have my A+ Certified they almost laugh in my face. CompTIA should make these exams a lot harder to put some credibility back into the certification and lower the price of this exams, I don't know but I really thing CompTIA is starting to loose is credibility in the real world. I really think now I wasted my $$ on the A+ certification when I should had use the $$ towards getting a decent cert like CCNA. And to add something to topic you cisco & MS braindumper but I realy think it would be hard to pick a CompTIA dumper as CompTIA exasm would let to many dumbs dumbs pass anyway without much studying.
8/16/03: who knows from nowhere says: what a crock of bologna! who can afford to fail these things when they are priced so high????????????? gimme a break
8/16/03: Anonymous from Philadelphia, PA says: This is a move in right direction. Any study guide is welcome but not the real questions. That way the certifications become useless. I have seen many people converted to become IT professional in the US from other blue-collar jobs (hair-dresser for example, I have seen) in the boom time. One way they did it I guess was by getting certifications this way.
8/18/03: I hire IT--and pass on a lot unfortunately says: I want to reply to the post that said CompTIA doesn't provide anything. Honestly, could this situation be any more clear cut than what the guy or gal said above. If you really have taken CompTIA exams, you'll notice (as CompTIA is proud to proclaim) that all of their tests are vendor-neutral. What value do these tests really give anyone? For crying out loud, for $200 Plus dollars you get a certification that is absolutely meaningless. I can't honestly bring myself to hire anyone that throws these certifications at me because they don't show me the individual has learned a darn thing. Basics don't cut it in this field when everyone has them. If the certifications and training you have are unique, then what value do you bring me? I just want to pass this along to all the unfortunate newer generation IT folks that are getting scammed by CompTIA, Brainbench, etc. The certifications from these organizations really do nothing for you. Please, learn Microsoft products, Cisco products, UNIX-based systems, and database programming if you want to bring real value to the work force. Just FYI from a person in the know.
8/18/03: I hire IT--and pass on a lot unfortunately says: Before someone hammers me for grammatical errors above, please replace "If the certifications and training you have are unique..." with "If the certifications and training you have are not unique..." I tried to make the post above lend some concrete advice and professionalism.
