CompTIA Sues Overseas 'Braindumper'

8/6/2003 -- According to court records, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is currently pursuing a copyright infringement case against CheatExams.com, a Web site that sells " real exam questions." The site's URL is registered to Adarsha Computers, which lists an address and phone number in Denmark.

CompTIA has pursued legal action against U.S. based braindump sites several times over the past few years, including a case in 2000 against the then-Texas based Troy Tech (click here, here and here for past coverage of this site) and another in 2001 against Cheet-Sheets. However, this appears to to be the first such suit filed against an overseas braindumper.

The civil copyright suit was originally filed in February in the U.S. District Court of Connecticut against a U.S.-based defendant named George Jennings. At the time, whois listed Jennings as the registrant for the URL.

Adarsha Computers, the current registrant, was added as a codefendant in May.

According to the case docket, neither defendant responded to the case, and CompTIA has asked the judge to grant it a summary judgment.

CertCities.com attempted to reach Adarsha Computers using the Denmark phone number listed, but received an out of service error. The e-mail address bounced. We also attempted to reach the site owners through the contact information given on CheatExams.com, but received no response. We were unable to verify the existence of Jennings.

According to AIRN.org, the IP address registered to the site is hosted in India. CertCities.com located an Adarsha Computer in India, but was unable to communicate with the company to find out if it has a connection to CheatExams.com. Adarsha appears to be a common naming convention for businesses and educational institutions in the country.

A spokesperson for CompTIA said that the organization could not respond to our request for comment by press time, but may be prepared to make a statement about the case shortly.

CertCities.com will bring you more information on this story as it becomes available. -Becky Nagel

8/7/03: Alex from Houston TX USA says: Ah, what to do about it... Well, for starters, we could cut every fiber optic line going to India. That will not only take care of that particular website giving out test questions so that the unqualified can cheat on the tests and get certified; but it will also allow some Westerners to get their jobs back from the hordes of Indians hired by greedy CEOs at burger-flipper wages.
8/8/03: IK says: I am and Administrator of a Prometric testing center. A VUE Testing Center also exists in our city, it is sad the way VUE Administrators are abusing this and doing Microsoft tests for candidates by taking extra money. The abuse is monumental. The responsibility does lie with the Candidates but the testing system as well to choose institutions which have a strong background and are well established. If any one want to know which VUE Center i am talking about mail me at [email protected]. It is just not me who is saying this the whole city knows the big secret accept the VUE people them selves. I am not saying that VUE is bad but their testing center is very bad and some one should inform them of this.
8/8/03: Anonymous says: Did you notify CompTIA, MS and other vendors about the testing center?
8/8/03: Anonymous says: mo' lawsuits
8/8/03: Becky Nagel from Editor, CertCities.com says: IK -Not sure why you're not contacting them directly? Like Prometric, each VUE center is individuall owned an operated. If you're serious about your allegations, you should contact VUE directly. Corporate contact information is available on the Vue Web site -- Becky
8/8/03: Anonymous says: To think that anybody needs a cheetsheet or copies of "real" test questions to pass a CompTIA test is the funniest thing I've ever heard. The CompTIA tests are so so simple that I'm surprised CompTIA is still able to charge money for them all these years.
8/8/03: DJ from USA says: We should sue CompTIA for overcharging and increasing the fees for the exams. $200 - $300 for the A Plus exams. Yeah and they wanted to crack down on these online discount voucher sites earlier this year. It's good they still exist. I got a Network Plus voucher plus CD prep for about $145 and they are not making money off their retail prices. Everybody else is buying the discount vouchers so they sue and It's all about mo money for them!!!
8/8/03: Customer Service Rep. at GetCertified@getcertified says: IK and Becky I have informed VUE about this posting by IK. I expect that they IK and do investigation on this. IK, Thanks for bringing it up. Customer Service Rep. http://www.getcertified4less.com
8/9/03: Vijay Krishna from Chicago, IL, USA says: Judging by the lack of grammatical accuracy, one can be fairly certain that the site is Indian (but then again, English might not be Denmark's primary language either). Here's another little observation - open both CheatExams.com and Expedia.com. Perhaps plagarism can be added to the lawsuit!!! Go get 'em, CompTIA!!!!!
8/10/03: Anonymous says: How about other cert sites such as Testking, mcsebraindumps. Is CompTIA going after these sites too?
