Cisco Scores 500,000 Certification Mark

4/22/2003 -- Cisco Systems announced yesterday that the company awarded its 500,0000th certification in March.

The only other companies known to have reached the half-million mark in their IT certification programs are Microsoft and Novell.

Cisco declined to provide a breakdown of the count by titles, but did say that the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) community has grown to 9,500.

"The continuing growth and adoption of Cisco Career Certifications, particularly in security and IP telephony, is evidence of Cisco's preeminence in the networking industry and increasing confidence in the competence of certified professionals," Tom Kelly, vice president of Cisco's Internet Learning Solutions Group, said in a printed statement announcing the milestone. "For employers and network professionals alike, Cisco certifications are badges of expertise, aptitude and hands-on capability that is unparalleled in the industry."

Cisco launched the CCIE title in 1993, with the full program (associate, professional, and expert levels) debuting in 1998. Since then, the program has grown into seven Career certifications (plus several CCIE tracks) and 13 Certified Specialist titles. Aside from the lab-based CCIE, some of Cisco's most well known certifications include the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and the Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP).

Last year, CertCities.com's readers voted Cisco's certification program as the best IT certification program. Its CCIE title also topped CertCities.com's list of the 10 Hottest Certifications for 2003.

More information on Cisco's certifications can be found here. -B.N.

4/22/03: Anonymous says: cisco is good, congrats! but novell has reached 500k? so unexpected...and microsoft? no need to tell. who cares about betmen, mind your own business! or you dont have one? I pity you poor thing...
4/22/03: Feisal from Karachi says: congragulations to cisco for all the good stuff that they produce every now and then and surely deserve it
4/23/03: Anonymous says: Thank you Cisco for watering down any value that was left in your certifications. Next certification...CCGS (Garbage specialist)
4/23/03: anonymous says: to the last person, how the hell do you figure cisco has watered down their certification? have you taken any cisco exam? blame the tech schools for teaching the test and not real world experience , dont blame cisco for having a lot of certified people in the field.Microsoft should take some lessons from cisco on measuring actual knowledge and hands on skills.
4/23/03: Anonymous says: Cisco certifications do not test on practical knowledge and hands on skills, no wonder you guys are always escalating! You always stand there quietly in any technical discussion because if you opened your mouth the technical poop would pop out.
4/23/03: anonymous says: I can't believe you have taken any Cisco exams and make the statement that they do not test you practical knowledge. They test on more practical skills than Microsoft exams do. And the new CCNA exam asks the candidate to enable rip and extablish convergence among 3 routers. That is some decent hands on skills that you should know to be a ccna. Their exams are much more straightforward tha ms tests.
4/23/03: Anonymous says: If you study using dumps, EVERYTHING is impractical, even CCIE's lab questions can be braindumped and someone can just memorize them with a little practice with the devices and get CCIE! Practical? Maybe yes, a little, than written exams that can be memorized. Good CCIE? Hell NO! So it depends on the people coz whenever there's a rule, there must be a way to break it, always! Welcome to the real life! And keep complaining, who cares!
4/24/03: Anonymous says: cisco, cisco!!blah blah! ur right!! can't even get a tech support job!!Cisco exam SAKS!!! even a 15 yr old stud can pass the ccie exam!!
4/24/03: Anonymous says: Oh yeah nothing is useful if the way you pass the exams is by MEMORIZING answers, no wonder you can't get a job and I really hope you'll NEVER! How old r u to complain like this? 13? No wonder. Well your opinion doesn't even count a tit bit on this. Stay far away from certs world then because your attitute SAKS!
