Cisco Scores 500,000 Certification Mark
4/22/2003 -- Cisco Systems announced yesterday that the company awarded its 500,0000th certification in March.
The only other companies known to have reached the half-million mark in their IT certification programs are Microsoft and Novell.
Cisco declined to provide a breakdown of the count by titles, but did say that the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) community has grown to 9,500.
"The continuing growth and adoption of Cisco Career Certifications, particularly in security and IP telephony, is evidence of Cisco's preeminence in the networking industry and increasing confidence in the competence of certified professionals," Tom Kelly, vice president of Cisco's Internet Learning Solutions Group, said in a printed statement announcing the milestone. "For employers and network professionals alike, Cisco certifications are badges of expertise, aptitude and hands-on capability that is unparalleled in the industry."
Cisco launched the CCIE title in 1993, with the full program (associate, professional, and expert levels) debuting in 1998. Since then, the program has grown into seven Career certifications (plus several CCIE tracks) and 13 Certified Specialist titles. Aside from the lab-based CCIE, some of Cisco's most well known certifications include the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and the Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP).
Last year, CertCities.com's readers voted Cisco's certification program as the best IT certification program. Its CCIE title also topped CertCities.com's list of the 10 Hottest Certifications for 2003.

Ok, lets back up a minute here, cisco's reached 500,000 certified individuals (I hold 3 separate certs from cisco), and have been working in I.T. a LONG time. Now, when I got my first cert (CNA), I thought wow...I've piled up 11 more since that time, and for all the bluster they represent, they don't do anything for me in my current job (system and network admin). Certifications ONLY have value when someone says that they do. I've met people who have more certs than I do, and couldn't troubleshoot to save their a--, and people who don't have any certs who could troubleshoot down to the component. If you are tired of re-certifying all the time, get a college degree (at least that doesn't need to be re-done every two to three years) :-) |

just because the new ccna has some simulation questions doesn't mean it's a good indicator of hands-on knowledge. i studied nothing but the sybex and cisco press ccna books for a month and passed the 640-607 with 90%. the simulation questions were nothing difficult, even for someone haveing never touched a router. |

Dk, no it does not however it is a better exam to measure hands on knowledge than the microsoft exams which do not have any sims. It is the idea that you should be familiar with router configuration commands to be a ccna and the exam asks you to do just that. You can also pass MCSE exams never having played with Windows. The thing is to reflect some sort of hands on "know how" especially in this market. |

What are you, Cisco's marketing monkey? |

nope not at all. Just think sims are good on certification exams. I also happen to think Cisco technology is pretty cool. |

Whatever you people say. My cert path opened all kinds of opportunities for me. I only have two certs mcse 4.0 and ccna oh I also have cis assoc degree. I switched from being an Accountant to IT and am currently companesated for my decision 3 folds. Say whatever you want. |

yup you who can't afford the certs can say whatever you want but life goes on. what do you think is a good hands-on test? ccie? dumps are also available, so what? it won't ever come to an end if you keep thinking about dumps. it's just how one obtained their certs and who's to blame is those who use shortcut, memorize the dumps for 2 days and get certified. but those people will always be around, whatever we, cisco, ms, comptia do, there's always cheaters, there's always dishonesty, this is the REAL WORLD, wake up!!!!!!! |

I'm reading some of these comments and it seems some of you are rather frustrated. This could be in part by your own lack of skills and experience. The fact is, through my experience, (20yrs in the computer/technology field) is that certifcations were intended to be a validation of your knowedege and a measure of potential in a given technical area. Over the years they've developed into hiring tool for HR people. The facts are, because there are "boot camps" and "braindumps", there are a number of underqualified cert holders out there. Seemingly less for cisco than others but there none the less. Face it, the market is down, and it's tough to get that fat job that everyone was talking about just a few years ago. Certs alone will not get you hired. If you got your cert through braindumps, you'll never get passed your tech interview, so in my book, you don't really count. A strong cert will get your resume' flagged, but it's your practical knowledge and experience that will land you the job. Also to the guy who thinks you can braindump your way to CCIE, stop dreaming and get a grip. (or better yet, start training so that maybe you can be one.) Thats what I'm doing. My point is, a strong cert does count, but the way you got it is what translates into $$$$. |

You ARE rather bitter aren't you? (And most likely unemployed.) It seems your negative attitude and use of foul language may be a good indication of YOUR quality of education and level maturity. I belive this forum is for people who want to make INTELLIGENT comments. Good luck on your next interview. Aloha!! |

Dumps are always there because people can always remember and tell what the questions they got in the exam to other people and eventually one will write them down and distribute them...and yes including CCIE, I heard the CCIE questions were available somewhere, sad but true, welsome to the real world. You know what happens in testing centers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, etc? One can take an exam with cheatsheets, books, friends, cellphone, pager, and anything you want to use or bring into the room, the attendant is cooperative after got paid by the testtaker, so compare it with using dump, what's the difference? Cheating is everywhere in any ways and won't stop till the end of time. It's all up to you how you're going to get your cert, study or cheat... |
