Novell Kills Specialty Titles

3/19/2003 -- In an undated post on its Web site, Novell has announced that it is discontinuing its Specialist certificate program.

The company gave no reason for the decision.

According to the post, the seven exams currently in the program will no longer count toward a Specialist certificate after August 31 of this year (July 10 for the ZenWorks exam).

The company added that many of the exams will still be available within Novell's Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) and Master CNE program.

The Specialist program was originally announced in 2001 along with the company's plans for a new streamlined CNE program. The Specialty designations were designed to allow candidates to show proof of a specialized skill by passing one exam. It officially launched later that year.

Novell did not say how the decision would affect current title holders.

3/21/03: Anonymous says: They have supposedly been toast for years.
3/24/03: Anonymous says: Well... anonymus... just take an Novell exam.. and you will be toast
3/24/03: Anonymous says: I think take M$ test really will be toasted, not Novell
3/25/03: Anonymous says: Novell sucks
3/27/03: Cadder says: Novell and Linux are the only NOS's out there that can give M$ a run for their money. Novell's tests are just as hard as M$ tests, and for the comment that Novell sucks, try running a M$ 2k server for a few years without rebooting, and have the ease of administration that Novell offers.
3/28/03: Dave from ATL says: Cadder, Ease of administration? Wow! maybe Novell has really improved since 4.x but I don't recall any "ease of administration"! Novell lost $250 million last year but still managed to give the CEO a $1 million dollar bonus! I wish I could run a business like that! :) I let my CNE die peacefully at 4.0
4/8/03: Anonymous says: no mo'money
5/8/03: renouncedCNE from arkansas says: I'm a CNE3 and CNE5 for a few years now. I seem to remember sticking up for Novell up until about the time Win2K and Exchange 2000 came out. They just wipe the floor. I was consulting for two companies in the same building, roughly the same size and level of technology. One was netware 5 with (cough) groupwise 5.5, the other w2k/exchange 2000. the difference was unfathomable. Sure, load netware one s server, have it do file and print serving -and NOTHING else - and you will never ave to reboot it. Because it doesn't do much. Want DHCP services, DNS, email, etc? Forget it. Groupwise. Database rebuilds. Constantly. Vomit.
6/2/03: Anonymous says: I am a network engineer consultant who support about 30 clinets. Within the last year, all but 1 client has decided to jump ship and move to W2K instead of Novell, even the ones who had already upgraded to Novell 6.
