EXCLUSIVE: CompTIA Postpones Wireless Cert

1/20/2003 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association no longer plans to release a wireless technology certification exam by the end of the year.

A CompTIA spokesperson told CertCities.com on Friday that exam development plans for the vendor-neutral wireless certification have been postponed for the time being so that the organization can further research the prospects of such a title. "We do think this title will serve a purpose," a spokesperson said, "[but] how do you create a vendor-neutral, entry-level certification when there's no worldwide standards for the technology? There's many types of job roles [within the wireless sector]...We need to better understand the audience."

CompTIA originally announced plans for the wireless title in September 2002. The organization's latest certification, Security+, debuted in December.

More information on CompTIA can be found at http://www.comptia.org. -B.N.

1/21/03: Drew from NC says: I agree. There's just not anywhere near enough standardization in the wireless world yet to justify a entry level certification that's vendor neutral. And with Network Plus, I'm not sure that Wireless is enough of a field by itself to make a good case for its own certification. Security Plus is good since its became such a huge part of the IT world but I don't think wireless really needs an independent cert just yet. My two cents! Drew
1/22/03: Andrew from IL says: At least someone out there is taking the time to consider the customer before releasing a new cert. It seams that many providers have a long list of available exams or certs that overlap or don't add any value to the existing programs. Does Cisco really need 17 specialty certs, what about the long list of Microsoft exams. I hope more cert providers follow CompTIA's example and consider the the usefulness of future exams.
1/22/03: Ed from NorthEast says: Vendor neutral certs serve a very important purpose, affirming that the holder has at least a clue about the technology with which they are working. The A Plus, Network Plus, and Security Plus exams are all comprehensive enough to be desirable, and there is no other cert in the field that is both neutral and entry level. I am not so sure about the Server Plus, and cannot address the others. However, there already exists a vendor neutral wireless certification, the Certified Wireless Network Administrator. www.cwne.com. It is NOT entry level, and it is endorsed by the WLANA. This cert says that you KNOW WLAN, and that you know all that is and is not standardized. It also makes sure that you don't show up on a stumbler map or news headline. CompTIA should continue to provide services where a need goes unfulfilled, but I am glad they are shying away from wireless. Too many certs from them will begin to dilute the value of what they already have. Trying to duplicate what is already out there lessens the value of all certs for all, both companies and individuals.
