Cisco To Replace Routing Exam with BCSI Friday

9/10/2002 -- Cisco Systems announced late last week that it would be permanently retiring its Routing exam (RTING 640-603) this Friday, Sept. 13.

Routing was a core exam requirement for Cisco's popular Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) titles.

Individuals registering for the Routing exam on or before September 13, 2002 will be able to take that exam through October 25, 2002. After that time, candidates will be required to take the program's Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BCSI 640-901) exam.

Cisco gave no reason for the exam change on its Web site, but Phoenix-based trainer Andy Barkl said that the switch didn't come as much of a surprise to him. "The [routing] course was replaced one year ago and updated by the BSCI course, which includes new topics such as the IS-IS routing protocol.," he said. "BCSI is the Routing exam on steroids. The BSCI exam also qualifies candidates for the CCIP certification."

"ISIS is very similar in many respects to OSPF," he continued. "If you have been studying for the exam, continue on, include some time to learn ISIS, and check for any other new updates to the exam objectives of the new CCNP Routing exam, BCSI 640-901."

10/1/02: William Rau from Monument, CO says: I have failed the 640-901 3 times! Need 700 to pass (mine:607, 697 & 643). I think ~ 57 Q's and usually one sim Q... bug in SW offered me the option of returning to the sim Q, but wouldnt' let me add command I forgot. You also lose time waiting for Q's to download. On the 1st test it said I failed but never printed out my results. 3rd time it never told me if I failed or passed! The graphical layout is very poor (some info barely legible). Not sure what the Cisco gods are trying to accomplish, aside from extra revenue! I'm still waiting for a viable practice test (I know the material two times better than any other exam I've already passed)!
10/24/02: Anonymous says: Finally, after 3 failed attempts @640-901... a valid practice exam is available: Additional resources to help prepare for the BSCI 640-901 exam are now available. The BSCI 640-901 practice exam is now available through Self Test Software. For more information, please visit: http://www.selftestsoftware.com/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=700 Also, chapters covering IS-IS protocol are now available for free through the Cisco Press website below: http://www.ciscopress.com/catalog/ccnp.asp?session_id={547DAC77-E810-495E-B208-D6FCB2BA6CAF} This information should help anyone preparing for this BSCI exam! Good luck. Now I will get my CCNP and find a challenging position in Gr. Falls or Helena, MT. W. Rau
6/10/03: syed from kabul says: cisco has to provide practice exam and required material to prepare exam and IS-IS protocol in detail regards syed
8/21/05: Adel from Saudia Arabia says: I wana to have matirial of BCSI.
