Help Removed from MOUS Exams

7/17/2002 -- Beginning late August, candidates taking Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) exams will no longer have access to Microsoft Office Help files.

Certiport, the organization that manages the MOUS certification program for Microsoft, explained the decision in an e-mail sent to media organizations earlier this month:

"As you may know, the Microsoft Office User Specialist exams are designed to assess a test taker's ability to complete specific tasks in Microsoft Office applications within a given time period.

"Although 70 percent of respondents to a recent survey among examinees in North American and Japan stated that they believe the ability to use the Office Help during a Microsoft Office User Specialist exam has 'little or no effect on exam scores' and 'no effect' on the perceived fairness of the exams, Certiport believes the move to disable Help during the 'live application' test-taking process will further enhance the ever-increasing value of Microsoft Office User Specialist exams as one of the most reliable means of measuring proficiency in the world's most popular desktop applications."

The statement goes on to say that although the Help file is a good reference tool for everyday usage, access during the exams makes it similar to an open-book test.

Certiport told CertCities.com that it could not provide an exact date for when the Help would be removed, only that it would happen sometime in late August.

Faithe Wempen, MOUS Master and author of several Office application guides, disagrees with this decision. "The strength of the MOUS testing environment is that it simulates real-world performance, and in a real-life situation, the Help system would be available," she explained. "Someone who might be able to complete a task with a little Help system prompting would not be able to do it on the test, so this makes the test less of an accurate gauge of how the person could perform in a real job situation."

Wempen said that she would have preferred that Certiport limited access to the Help files through time restrictions or other means instead of removing them entirely.

More than 500,000 MOUS certifications for various Office applications have been granted since the program's launch four years ago. MOUS exams are available through 9,000 iQ testing centers worldwide.

9/21/02: anonymous says: I got my MOUS Master Certification two days ago. I did GREAT on all the tests, and have to say that the tests in no way reflect what you know. This cert is a joke. I wonder if Microsoft is actually aware of just how ludicrous this is, and Certiport isn't much better. This is run nothing like the real Microsoft certification exams, MCSE, MCSA, MCSD, etc. It is truly appalling.
9/21/02: Myles from Texas says: As a part-time educator I have found that knowledge is not always "knowing" the answer. It is also having the ability to "find" the amswer.
9/27/02: David H from Auckland says: Well I gained 2000 Master in Feb 2002 (average score 90%). I’m about to sit my XP Mous For Master, Knowing that help is no longer available I do feel that it’s not a real representative of "real life" scenario. I’m an Instructor I demonstrate the help to "real life" show how it works properly. If used correctly it is a real great asset to know as much as know shorts-cuts or you’re way around the menus. If has been removed tis a sad day. Just think in real life you get a mental blockage deadines to meet 5 mins to go how does that if statement go to not show anything in a cell is the answer is zero? =IF(B21<>"",ROUNDUP((IF(B21<>"",(B21*I21)*(1-J21/100),"")),2),"") of course you say !! and help can show you that if you know how to use it alongside everything else you know about Microsoft Office. Anyhoo I’ll keep you all posted when I’m an XP Mous Certified Trainer!!

10/30/02: Sam Barry from Ireland says: I have only just begun studying for MOUS and have passed the core exams for Word, Excel and the comprehensive for Access. During the exams I found you don't have time to fully explore the help options to get your answer if you don't know it already. As each question has up to 4 small questions to it and most exams have up to 40 questions with a time limit of 45 mins, you practically have to know how to answer the question as you read it you will run out of time if you have to search the assistant or help functions to answer correctly. Therefore I think it's a mute point removing the help option as it won't help you cheat on a task and timed based competency exam such as MOUS is designed for.
11/19/02: Maria from New Zealand says: This is an exam - if you don't know the material and need to rely on Help, you shouldn't be sitting the exam!
6/16/03: Joseph Pappy from Sarasota says: I am angry. MOUS exam should not be a speed reading contest. Just because a professional some where has taken the test in 45 minutes, it does not mean that people who have mastered the subject can pass this exam. 17 questyions with several parts in MOS XP ACCESS exam. You should not make MOs XP exaM A SPEED READING CONTEST. THIS IS WRONG. ASSESS WHAT A PERSON KNOWS IN THE SUBJECT AREA. NOT HIS/HER ABILITY TO READ ENGLISH FAST FAST FAST . YOU HAVE MADE MOS EXAM XP, A SPEED READING CONTEST.
