MS: Accelerated Exam Was "Learning Experience"

1/23/2002 -- The Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam was Microsoft's first try at a composite test, and although it isn't saying whether it considers the exam a success or not, Redmond hasn't ruled them out in the future.

In an interview with Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine, Anne Marie McSweeney, Microsoft's director of certification skills and assessment, declined to give the pass/fail rates for the Accelerated Exam, saying that "disclosing information like this can be really, really misleading."

The Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam, which expired at the end of 2001, was available to anyone who had finished the Windows NT 4.0 core exams. An alternative to taking the core four Win2K tests, it was free to test-takers, but was also a one-shot deal: If you failed it, you couldn't retake it, and failing any one out of the four sections also resulted in a failing grade for the entire exam.

"This was a 1.0 [version of the test]: Keep that in mind," McSweeney said. "I would say we learned a lot from it. It provided an option for customers, and given that the technology's advanced, it's given us the ability to create a better solution next time." In the future, she suggested, a composite test might be structured such that candidates could take make-up exams for those modules failed.

Microsoft emphasized in the interview that 70-240 was "psychometrically sound."

McSweeney did admit to some frustration among those who attempted the test. "70-240 was not as customer-friendly as we'd like." But overall, she added, "I'm satisfied. I look at the learning we got from it that we can apply to future exams."

Although the evidence is entirely anecdotal at this point, it's apparent that a large number of test-takers, even perhaps a majority, failed the exam. Those who failed have to take each exam individually on their way to their Windows 2000 MCSE. Those who passed still have to take one design elective and two other electives to receive their credential. -Keith Ward, MCPMag.com

1/25/02: Chris from Folsom says: I'd have to agree with those who took and passed the 70-240 exam. I setup a lab at home and worked with Win2k for several months while working through several study guides. I thought the exam was pretty much in line with all the other MS tests I've taken. If you think it was tough sitting for 4 hour exam try the Series 7 Stock Broker exam at 6 hours. If you are focused and put the time in to learn the product rather than strictly study for the test you would have passed.
1/28/02: Ruth says: I have to say, even though I passed 70-240, that I did not think it was a very good assessment of the everyday skills we all use in supporting NT - 2000. For me the test took about 3 hours for all four sections. I did take advantage of the break opportunities between to rest my eyes and stretch. I thought many of the questions depended on how well you read a book, not your support skills.
1/29/02: LB from Texas says: I passed the 70-240 test in about 2.5 hours. Some of the questions were ambiguious some were easy. I actually thought the test would be harder. I still would have liked to seen my score. I try to get the highest score possible, not to just pass the test. I prepared for the test by using the study guides, setting up a lab and using Transcender practice tests to get a feel for how the questions would be worded. I agree with Ruth that many questions don't deal with situations that I may encounter on the job.
1/29/02: MCSE Instructor from Indiana says: At the school where I teach, 3 of four instructors failed the 240 including my mentor who was a beta tester for Win2K. This exam was just a bear and like all other MS exams, sometimes you get an easy one and sometimes it gets you. I have passed 2 of the four core and found them easy so I figure that I just got one of the evil question sets when I took 240. But, I agree that MS should show us the test scores and section scores. Those times that you fail, this info really helps you to focus on what you need to know and not providing this info will just give those who are already inclined to cheat another reason.
1/29/02: Anony from NYC NY says: Whats the point anyway. Most employers know this cert holds no kernal of value anymore. So why waste your time (unless it is required for your job). Don't think you will break into the industry by passing Win2000 on the first try. Enough with all the hoopla.
1/30/02: lars from canada says: Hi, even if I failed the exam. I am still proud that I gave it a try. I spent a lot of time also preparing for it. I also wish we get feedbacks on what area we need to focus on more. Or better to retake just the sections we failed. I think this is fairer rather than taking all of the exams again one by one. It is pretty hard for me to start it all over again.
2/5/02: Anonymous says: Some tie her up and gag her before she even attempts to speak about these test.
2/5/02: George from London says: I studied for 6 months for the exam. Yes it was lengthy but it was not as difficult as I had been led to believe. The network section was reasonably deep but the rest no harder than the NT4 track. I guess it's easy once you've passed.
2/6/02: MW from UK says: Sorry guys but I too worked hard for my 2000 certification, reading books, setting up test labs at home (ever heard of Virtual PC - it IS possible!) and really earning my qualification. Yet still I get asked whether I used cheat exams! Hats off to Microsoft for weeding out the drop outs - you should do more weeding in the individual exams too!! After I had completed it was really sad to realise that maybe the MCSE is not worth the paper it is written on any more. And I am tired of the patronising "real"cheats who try and elbow me out just because I am a female "older person" .I can still run rings around them - just wish Microsoft "test" them out sooner rather than later!
2/9/02: cpowell from central pennsylvania says: The accelerated exam was a true test of comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of microsoft networking skills. Many of us have strengths and weaknesses that lie in areas that the test exploited. I believe that microsoft should have identified which sections the test taker passed or failed, and given credit to the individual for those sections. This would have given the individual feedback as to what skill areas need attention. I found the test to be a learning experience too, but i would have liked to have known what section(s) I failed or passed.
