Details on New MCSD, MCSE Exams Leak Out

9/12/2001 -- According to a recent edition of the Certification Corner e-mail newsletter, several .NET-related MCSD exams have been labeled and are in the works. They are:

  • 70-300 Analyzing Requirements and Designing Solutions Architecture for Windows .NET
  • 70-304 Developing Windows Applications with Visual C++
  • 70-305 Developing Web Applications with VB.NET
  • 70-306 Developing Windows Applications with VB.NET
  • 70-310 Developing Applications on the .NET Framework
  • 70-315 Developing Web Applications with C#
  • 70-316 Developing Windows Applications with C#

One or more of these exams may also apply to the new mid-level developer certification Microsoft is creating.

When asked for comment, Microsoft declined to officially acknowledge these exams. However, if this list remains intact, it follows a familiar scheme that Microsoft has been following, only this time the company is heavily pushing the familiar and omnipresent .NET technology.

Certification Corner also lists details of Microsoft's forthcoming exams for the MCSE track:

  • 70-280 Network Systems and Directory Services Fundamentals
  • 70-272 Migrating from NT 4.0 to Windows .NET Server

The 70-280 exam, according to the newsletter, will be an offering under the new "Systems Administrator" track that Microsoft is developing; there's no indication whether it will also be an MCSE elective. Microsoft has also declined to comment on the development of these exams. -MCPMag.com

2/6/02: Justin Kayatin from New York, NY says: I am a novice developer who is currently teaching himself C-Sharp (Using both the Deitel and WROX texts, which are giving me a very comprehensive introduction to the subject). I eagerly await the release of Visual C-Sharp.NET, so in the meantime I am using MS' latest .NET SDK to do the problems illustrated in both texts. Can anyone out there answer two questions for me: (1) What timeframe is reasonable (given approx. 8 hours of study per week) to gain enough proficiency to be able to land a job in this industry, with the ultimate goal being that of gaining enough job training to pass the MCSD examinations? (2) Would it be wise, at my (admittedly novice) level of development to begin charting a course that would ultimately lead to that first good job, such as focusing on Windows Application Development -vs- Web Services? I appreciate any and all responses, and thank all responders in advance for their gracious insight.
