A+ Exams Adaptive Once More

7/9/2001 -- The Computer Technology Industry Association has announced that both A+ exams (Core Hardware and OS) will go to adaptive format later this summer.

"Effective August 31, the adaptive format will be the only format of the exam[s]," the organization's Web site states. "All translations...for the A+ exam[s] will be [in this] format."

-- advertisement (story continued below) --

Adaptive testing is a method of identifying the level of a candidate's knowledge using the fewest number of questions possible. In an adaptive test, the candidate is given a relatively easy question. If that question is answered correctly, a more difficult question follows, and so on until a question is missed; if incorrect, an easier question is asked in the same process. Thus, the total number of questions asked depends on the test taker. (For a detailed explanation of adaptive testing, see our Certification Lexicon.)

In their current format, the exams feature 70 questions each. With the transition to adaptive format, the tests will feature only 20 to 30 questions, and the time limit for each exam will be cut to 30 minutes.

According to CompTIA, the pass rates for both exams will remain the same, and candidates who take one exam in standard format before the deadline can take the other in adaptive format -- e.g., mixing and matching is allowed.

Adaptive format is not new to the A+ certification program. The previous version of the exams, based on a set of objectives released in 1998, were given in adaptive format until their retirement earlier this year.

For more information on this announcement, please visit the A+ section of the CompTIA Web site and click on the "Adaptive FAQ" link. -B.N.

11/6/01: dodo says: How long is a NHL hockey rink
12/13/01: Ricky-d says: It looks like comptia wants you in and out faster so they can get your money in 30 minutes instead of 90 minutes. If you work with computers for a living and study I can see writing the exam as they say in 6 months or so but if you are like myself, pressured by my job to get this certification, but never working on pc's its very difficult. Some people have a life. Oh yes, to dodo supid, an NHL rink is about 200' x 90'. Some rinks were a little smaller but most of the new ones are about this size. Oylimpic size is 200'x100'. That extra size makes a big difference. Basic knowlege when your Canadian ehh !!
8/22/02: William P from Atlanta, GA says: I just took the A Plus exam after completing a certified Comptia training course... and failed! Not one question on the test was in the Comptia training materials. Not only that, the time and money spent for the course was a complete waste. No matter how much I studied (and I busted my ass), I could not have passed the test by studying the training materials. In addition, there were bogus questions on the test--questions which were either completely illogical, or for which there were no right answers. If you're considering taking this test... BEWARE!
8/22/02: William P. from Atlanta says: Reflecting on my above comment, the more I think about this test and reflect on some of the questions on it, the more fraudulent this process seems. As far as Comptia is concerned, the more times an individual has to take a test to pass, the more money they make. Comptia certifies the testing process, but who certifies Comptia? NO ONE! This is a completely unregulated process. I would recommend to anyone considering taking the APlus exams to get their training materials from someone other than Comptia. APlus books are available from Barnes and Nobles, Borders, and others. Fact is, though, it doesn't matter who you get your training materials from, if the tests are fraudulent, you're not going to pass the test without considerable luck. As for me, I'm still trying to figure out how many times I have to take the test before I can get one that has questions on it from the Comptia training materials I studied. As for the present, I'm stumped.
