A+ Exams Adaptive Once More

7/9/2001 -- The Computer Technology Industry Association has announced that both A+ exams (Core Hardware and OS) will go to adaptive format later this summer.

"Effective August 31, the adaptive format will be the only format of the exam[s]," the organization's Web site states. "All translations...for the A+ exam[s] will be [in this] format."

-- advertisement (story continued below) --

Adaptive testing is a method of identifying the level of a candidate's knowledge using the fewest number of questions possible. In an adaptive test, the candidate is given a relatively easy question. If that question is answered correctly, a more difficult question follows, and so on until a question is missed; if incorrect, an easier question is asked in the same process. Thus, the total number of questions asked depends on the test taker. (For a detailed explanation of adaptive testing, see our Certification Lexicon.)

In their current format, the exams feature 70 questions each. With the transition to adaptive format, the tests will feature only 20 to 30 questions, and the time limit for each exam will be cut to 30 minutes.

According to CompTIA, the pass rates for both exams will remain the same, and candidates who take one exam in standard format before the deadline can take the other in adaptive format -- e.g., mixing and matching is allowed.

Adaptive format is not new to the A+ certification program. The previous version of the exams, based on a set of objectives released in 1998, were given in adaptive format until their retirement earlier this year.

For more information on this announcement, please visit the A+ section of the CompTIA Web site and click on the "Adaptive FAQ" link. -B.N.

7/9/01: Jimmy says: I think adaptive will be harder to get pass, cuz you cant go back marked questions and they are counting the level by what questions they are asking you. Even you have 23 correct questions right out of 30 but you might still consider fail cuz you are not reach the level of what they are asking for. The 23 correct questions might only the Easy level for them and you miss the last 7 mid or high level questions and you are FAIL still. I like the regular 70questions with 73% pass much easier and better.
7/12/01: fatguy says: NO WAYYYYYYYYYYYY NO WAY FOR THE Adaptive. For those ppl who took 70questoins like me is not fair. We have been asked for 140questions for both exam, and now this new fish only ask them 40-60 questions thats it ?????????????????? NOOOOOOOO
7/12/01: Pablo says: Its easy to memorise answers and have no knowledge of the actual question being asked...thats why adaptive is more appropriate. I can see it scarin a hell of a lot of you dudes who think you know it all, ... till you get asked how..
7/13/01: Paul says: Although it's nice to be able to return to past questions you weren't sure of, I believe adaptive will "test your mettle". The times most critical in a job are when you have to put out fires and don't have time to look something up or ask advice. Although I've not taken the tests yet, I look forward to the challenge of passing harder and harder quetions.
7/18/01: Anonymous says: Gimme a break. I walked out of the exam room in 10 minutes, passed both parts easily. Either you know it or you don't. Obviously I do.
7/20/01: Scott says: Well some people know the infomation, but can't apply its practical uses.
7/24/01: MissMary says: I took the 70 question and fail by a couple of questions, I study 24-7 for it to take it again. I didn't know anything about it until this spring class I took. Besides what I know already, I still have to study for the OS test, after the Core test. So, bye, guys.
7/29/01: Hashim says: i like your change about exams and want to ask you a question that is there any time limit about for giving these exams.
9/5/01: Harry says: I think the adaptive will be a great challenge. Unlike the Standard where sometimes you get asked the same question 2x and may even get just network questions
9/12/01: knuckel says: I took and passed both of the 2001 objective exams on the standard format after only reading one book for less than 2 weeks. My background is extensive though. I would like someone to tell me why they are doing this. Are they trying to get more people to pass? If so why? More to fail? They already have ridiculous trick questions that have two of the same answer in some cases, so what next? All wrong answers? I say CompTIA just found a way to rip more people off with this scam!
