More Than Just Canada: Microsoft Debating World-Wide MCSE Name Change
6/20/2001 -- Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine reports in its July 2001 issue that Microsoft is considering a world-wide revision of the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) moniker.
The article, which appears on page 16 of the issue, says that "Microsoft has considered following suit with IBM and Cisco, both of which use 'expert' in the name of their premier credentials...[Microsoft is] also debating the possibility of revamping the title altogether." Eckhardt Bohme, a certification manager for Microsoft, is cited as the source of the information.
Although it has previously been speculated that Microsoft would change "Engineer" to "Expert" for Canadian MCSEs due to conflicts with licensing boards there, the article is the first time that Microsoft has publicly acknowledged that it is considering changing the name of the title for all MCSEs, or perhaps even scrapping the acronym for something else altogether.
Currently, the magazine's online counterpart, MCPMag.com, is conducting a survey to get MCSEs reaction to possible replacement titles. According to Dian Schaffhauser, editorial director of MCP Magazine, the information gathered will be shared with Microsoft. (Note: MCP Magazine and CertCities.com are both owned by 101communications.)

I have many certifications including the dreaded CCIE. Business' recognize these by name and changing them could only affect an opportunity for a position if the employer has no knowledge of the change... We're talking anagement and how many managers do we know really understand this whole thing? I'd like to keep them the same. Maybe a gradual change through the years, but gradual. Not many places will be able to keep up with it. It's simple. Why change something that has worked so well for so long? Are they bored there or what? 'Let's see what else we can change here!!!' Bill mutters... I think not! |

Change it to 'MCSI' for Microsoft Certified System Integrators. |

I think Microsoft takes the word 'Engineer' too lightly. An MCSE is certainly not equal to an Electrical Engineer - at least not the ones I have seen! |

Who cares if they change it? Lets just keep getting it done and don't worry about it. Whatever monniker your Microsoft card carries will indicate what tests you have been able to pass. What you can do or have done in the real world to keep your skills current will come through during your probationary period. "Real" Engineers, relax, no one is trying to diminish your skills and accomplishments. Your training and skills are DIFFERENT, not better, by the way, as many "Real" Engineers I have met seem to think. Chill out and just get it done. If you can't you won't hide out for long. |

It would be interesting to see Microsoft defend its MCSE certification and the half million of us who hold it with some vigor. Surely the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers and its Texas counterpart are less formidable opponents than the U.S. Department of Justice. With no disrespect intended toward EEs and others who have worked hard for their degress, the claim that completion of a four-year curriculum at a North American university or passing a professional examination (!) entitles them to exclusive use of the title "Engineer" is humbuggery. The prestige of CCIE notwithstanding, MCSE is the most important certification in our profession today. My job title at one of the largest and most highly-respected American corporations includes the words "Systems Engineer". |

What really boils my blood is that Microsoft does not even know what they are doing. I got two e-mails from them last week stating that it was going to be a change in Canada only, and now this. I was no happy at the anticipation of a name change at that time because I felt that it would lower the value of the certification in Canada. Now, one week later it appears that they want the name change to be Worldwide, which in a sense is better. Microsoft is simply a prime example of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing and now obviously has no clue where it is going with its certifications and designations. There have been so many changes in recent months, that it makes me wonder if their certifications will go the way of Novell. I think I may not even bother with the upgrade and move on to Cisco and Linux!!! |

To quote Joe Blogg; "Who cares what Canadians think ..." Thanks for that wonderfully insightful and equally ignorant comment, Joe. Keep doing your part to uphold the international opinion that Americans are rude and self-centered. In your case, MCSE should read My Self Centered Ego. |
