MOUS Master Instructor Ed. Requirements Released

6/6/2001 -- On Friday, Microsoft announced the education requirements for its upcoming MOUS Master Instructor certification.

According to the MOUS.net Web site, candidates will need one of the following in order to apply for the program:

  • A diploma or transcript indicating that the instructor has satisfied the requirements for a college degree in one or more fields of educational study; or
  • Written verification from a current or past employer of two or more years of employment delivering competent training on Microsoft Office applications; or
  • A certificate indicating that the instructor has completed a Microsoft-approved presentation skills or Train-the-Trainer course; or
  • An instructor completion certificate from any of the following vendors: Caldera, Certified Internet Webmaster, Cisco Systems, Citrix, Lotus, Microsoft, Novell, Oracle or Santa Cruz Operation, Inc.

The requirements are very similar to those required for its predecessor, the MOUS Authorized Instructor (MOUS AI) program.

As reported earlier by CertCities, Microsoft decided last month that it will replace the MOUS AI with the MOUS Master Instructor program this July. MOUS Master Instructor requires passing more exams than did the MOUS AI, and does not offer logo benefits. Fees and some other details of the new program still have yet to be determined, although Microsoft has said it will offer a discount to current MOUS AIs who apply to become MOUS Master Instructors.

6/6/01: Sondra says: I had submitted my application package last month--right before the program ended. I got an email from them today--I meet the qualifications for the new program, and they will let me know how much it will cost soon! Wonder what the price will be--must be more than the old $50 or they wouldn't be making such a deal. What do you think?
6/6/01: guess who? says: I just received my AI certificate last month. I think they should apply the entire $50 to the MOUS Master certificate. It just so happened that I completed all four test except Outlook. The main reason why I did not take the test because we do not teach that application on a high school level. Now, I have no choice. Also, what is the reason for not allowing us to use the MOUS logo on business cards etc.
6/6/01: Fred says: OK, what's different between this requirement and the old one? I can't find any differences.
6/6/01: Anonymous says: Fred-You may have missed some interim requirements that were posted-The Train the Trainer was not being offered-but they were requiring a Degree in Education or teaching certificate. Congratulations to Microsoft for listening to many of us who have made investments in preparing for the MOUS AI that were not being allowed anymore.
6/7/01: Lynn says: What's the deal with the logo? We work hard, pass the tests--we should be able to proudly display the logo. Tell Microsoft to quit be stingy with the logo.
6/7/01: Anonymous says: The requirments are very similar to the previous program. It would be nice to receive an e-mail from Nivo/Microsoft on receiving an application to apply for the new program and all of the details. This entire change of the program could have been handled better, instead we will be left without an official logo to use and I expect when July 1 we will still be waiting for additional details. The ones who have worked hard to pass the exams and help market the MOUS program will be left holding the bag again.
6/7/01: Lotten says: Can we still use DCC publishing to get books for classes we may want to teach? Also, do we have to take the exams again or are we going to get the Master Certificate for the previous exams we passed.
6/7/01: Anonymous says: I agree Lynn, we should have a log we can display on business cards, resumes, outlines, etc. MCP's have a logo they can use. On the mous site, it said possibly a certificate, wallet card. The message that is being sent is that being a MOUS Master Instructor is not important enough for a logo to use on business cards. Once again the MOUS program gets kicked.
6/7/01: Anonymous says: I have NOT as of this date, officially received an email or letter from NIVO or MICROSOFT advising me that the MOUS AI program will cease to exist as of June 30th. I found out about this because my membership kit which was sent out of me - stating that I had become an MOUS Authorized Instructor (along with the certificate), included various web sites for instructors. If I had not bothered to visit these sites, I would have never known about these changes. Shame on NIVO and MICROSOFT for not advising existing MOUS AI's prior to making this general public knowledge. Talk about being professional!
6/7/01: Yvonne says: I do not think the standard was raised with this new MOUS AI program. Specifically the requirement for teaching experience, which was orginally 3 yrs, is now 2 years. I am questioning whether the MOUS program is worth the time and money. I don't see an industry appreciation for those like myself, who can prove qualification with the MOUS certification program.
