Cisco Press Offers Simulation Study Tools

10/17/2000 -- Cisco Press recently released six programs to help candidates without test equipment prepare for the company's certification exams.

The interactive software, called Cisco Interactive Mentor (CIM), simulates the experience of working with a network. Each program is designed to teach Cisco configuration and troubleshooting methodologies by providing networking technology instruction and a simulated network environment for self-paced, hands-on interactive learning.

The new series includes kits for router basics, IP routing (distance vector protocols), voice internetworking, LAN switching, access ISDN, and expert routing. All have a suggested retail price of $149.95, except the LAN switching kit, which retails for $199.95.

Cisco offers demos of three of its kits at http://www2.ciscopress.com/changeling.cfm?chnglng=16&sbchnglng=50. -- TCPmag.com

10/25/00: Becky says: Are simulation tools like the ones described above really enough to pass Cisco certification exams? Or is hands-on experience absolutely required? Does it depend on the certification (CNA, CNE, CCIE), or do they all require hands-on experience? Let us know what you think. --Becky Nagel, editor, CertCities.com
10/25/00: Anonymous says: If the work requirement is based on software interface only, where you input commamds on the screen, then do not need to have hands on experience. If the work requirment is hardware based or have partial harware requirement, then hands on experience is must to get the confidence.
10/25/00: Hinne says: I'd say that for CCNA it is possible to get the cert with a simulation tool. For CCNP it is a very, very, bad idea. Of course, for CCIE, perish the thought.
10/26/00: Tom says: I have tried Cisco's CIM demo, I think it is cute. The demo is perfect for someone to try a lab or two and see if CCNA is something you really want to invest that much time in. If the choice is between nothing and a sim, USE THE SIM! If you get certified with a sim, don't tell a prospective employer that you have experience, it is not the same. A sim wont help you install your first cards, or tftp an ios to a flash card, thats the difference.
10/26/00: Shawn says: I dont believe the sim is enough. There are a lot more to router than just the IOS commands on the sims. I agree with Tom J. Even with the other certs that Becky talks about you really can't be a serious CNA or MCSE if you don't have the hands on experience. I would use the sims only to get in the door to get the hands on experience you need.
10/26/00: Robert says: I have reviewed the Cisco IP routing CIM and it is not a true simulator. Its more like a interactive CBT that teaches you a IOS command then has you type it on the screen and it simulates that particular command. Does any one know of simulators that actually simulate various Cisco routers? - i.e. (2500's, Catalyst 5000, etc...). It would be nice if a guy could simulate a CCIE rack of routers without all the cost of buying all the Cisco hardware! Thanks
10/26/00: Charles says: I think it depends on the person. Some people can read about a subject and do fine at it, others need hands on. I need hands on and I am lucky enough to have access to routers and switches. Simulations are a very good tool for practicing the IOS commands but you really need to get your hands on the equipment.
10/27/00: Neelam says: I am MCSE,Network+, and sitting for CCNA in a week I took training (40 Hrs)on Cisco 2500,switch1900.I am working on CCNA virtual lab e-Trainer from Sybex.I am not that happy.I have plans for CCNP.I have no access to Routers.I am in KSA.I looked in to your demo.I could not go to configuration part .Pls advice me .
10/27/00: laurie says: I brought the Expert IP routing cim and I was very dissatifed in the program.Their are 4 labs consisting of serveral steps to complete the lab.Once the lab is finished you gain a password to next lab.To me it wanst challenging enough for 149.00,but if you wont a touch of what it takes to complete a configuration than buy it.Just remember this for all of you who are in the certification track do what ever it take to get certified. To me my career depends on it. lcooper ccna, ccda
11/2/00: Shakil says: How can I get this simulator? If I use the demo version of this simulator, then how much it help me. Reply.
