MOUS AI To Become MOUS Master Instructor

5/22/2001 -- Microsoft has decided to replace the MOUS AI program with a new certification: MOUS Master Instructor.

The new title will be a part of the existing MOUS Master program and, as such, will have the same exam requirements as the current MOUS Master:

MOUS Master 97 Instructor

  • Microsoft Word 97 Expert
  • Microsoft Excel 97 Expert
  • Microsoft Access 97 Expert
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Expert

MOUS Master 2000 Instructor

  • Microsoft Word 2000 Expert
  • Microsoft Excel 2000 Expert
  • Microsoft Access 2000
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

Previously, AI candidates were required to pass two MOUS exams in their track, as well as meet the program's education requirements. According to Bruce Reemsnyder, senior director of Strategic Accounts for Nivo International (the organization that manages the MOUS program for Microsoft), the new title will have similar educational requirements as AI -- the increased number of exams is the major difference.

"Our Master program is the highest-level [MOUS certification] we offer. It was pointed out to us by both instructor and our partners that some of the students were certified at a higher level than the instructors [because some students were master level]," he explained. "It makes sense that our instructor should have the highest-level certification."

"Blending the concepts seemed to be the natural evolution of AI," he continued. "This new program will offer an increased ROI for participants and in turn a new challenge. We have raised the bar for instructors and the student will continue to benefit through a continuously improving classroom experience."

Reemsnyder told CertCities that current MOUS AIs can use their titles and logos until June 30 of this year -- the date by which AIs would normally need to renew their certification. At that time, the MOUS AI program will be retired, and candidates will need to apply to become MOUS Master Instructors.

Fees for the new program have yet to be worked out, although Reemsnyder said that significant discounts will be given to those previously MOUS certified.

According to Reemsnyder, complete details of the new program will be published on the MOUS Web site within the next two weeks, which would give current MOUS AIs just one month to turn around an application for the new program before their current title expires. New candidates who had attempted to apply to the MOUS AI program during the past few weeks will be on hold until the new certification is implemented.

One such candidate is Eileen Kelly, who found out about the retirement of the MOUS AI last week when she attempted to apply for the program.

At that time, Kelly was only told that the MOUS AI program was being discontinued, which caused her considerable frustration. "Over the last two months I have spent nearly 1500GBP on exam fees, travel and accommodation, study materials, and the recognized Train The Trainer Course and Video assessment," she told CertCities. "In addition to this there is the amount of study time required to pass the Expert exams. Knowing that this expense was for nothing is painful."

When told the about the new program by CertCities, Kelly said that the retirement makes more sense to her now, but that she still isn't happy with the changes. "I am obviously frustrated that the work and expense I put into the MOUS AI program did not deliver any benefits, but at least it wasn't totally wasted. I had intended to progress to Master certification anyway, but the delay will cause me considerable inconvenience," she said.

"The main reason I’m angry at whoever is responsible (be it Microsoft or Nivo) is the fact they gave us no forewarning, letting people continue to pursue this accreditation."

When asked about the short notice given candidates, Reemsnyder replied that he understands the frustration this has caused some MOUS AIs, adding "I wish we could have come out with the details sooner."

As stated above, information on the new MOUS Master Instructor title will be published on the MOUS.net Web site within the next two weeks, and Microsoft has indicated that current MOUS AIs will also receive individual notification via e-mail.

CertCities will report any further details here as they become known. - B.N.

6/4/01: Anonymous says: If the Eduaction autorities suddenly changed the reqirements for pubic school teaching to require all teachers (except a few) to retrain on an entirely new subject (which they may never teach)and required that the teaching qualifications held were no longer valid and that unless all teachers obtained the new (*not an update the old but a new one as microsoft have demanded) qualification within 30 days they would all be sacked, would there be an educational system after that date?
6/4/01: Anonymous says: Other vendors expect you to update on the product you are teaching not learn an entirely new product
6/4/01: Anonymous says: Re british educator I have read the agreement and it implies that the AI program will continue (with updating required). MI is a brand new program with new requirements above and beyond updating (ie having to learn another application that is not used).
6/4/01: George says: I have read all the commments about MS/Nivo changing The AI Cert to a MI Cert and requiring a 4 year teaching degree to become a MI. Quite frankly I think it sucks! I have over 20 years of business experience using all types of application software including MS products. However, I don't have a teaching degree and don't want one. I don't care what you snobs think, having a teaching degree does not make one a good technical instructor. Anybody can follow a script, aka lesson plan. I am beginning to think this entire MOUS program is a scam. I have never seen a job posting from any employer in the Midwest United States where a MOUS certification was listed as a job requirement. However, I have seen plenty where MCSE, MCDBA, etc. where listed as job requirements.
6/4/01: Nancy says: Hi! I am the Nancy from Posting #8. (The one boo-hooing about changing the requirements to not include the TTT program.) I am SO relieved to find out that it will be honored as a education credential. However, although I have invested so much into this program, I really do question the benefit of it. I totally agree with George Givens about the fact that most employers either have never heard of it - or don't view it as a "REAL" certification. I am from MN and I work full time at a technical training center. I am the lead Microsoft Desktop Apps. Instructor. Prior to my hire - my employer had never heard of this cert and sortof found it amusing that there was such a certification available. Over the past year I have worked hard convincing my employer as well as students I train that this is a "Real" certification and that it means something. But, after all is said and done - this MOUS MASTER (soon to be MASTER-AI) is a bit jaded and let down. PS. I have yet to find a job posting preferring a MOUS certification of any kind.
6/5/01: Anonymous says: The above comments are very true, the main reason is that niether microsoft nor Nivo advertise ythe programme plus there is no support or networking setup for AI's (MI's). It is just a marketing tool to get others to promote office and MOUS for free it has been treated like a product by marketeers.
6/5/01: Anonymous says: The MCSE quals etc are based on what the job is, which is why they are important however in business MOUS would play a relatively minor role for a candidate to get a job since other capabilities such as people skills, general knowledge, office management etc also play an important part in their job.
6/5/01: Fiona says: To the person who mentioned "passing" a TTT course, the website says completed, there was no exam at the end of my course or level of competency to pass that I am aware of. I am not sure what you are referring to?
6/5/01: Anonymous says: I absolutely whole-heartedly agree that the MOUS MI and AI is a total scam used to make NIVO/Microsoft more money and gain free advertising. Of course, we instructors will do it - because we feel we have to stay current with certifications and industry standards. But, hopefully a rep from the MOUS program/Nivo will read these comments and realize that we are not the stupid little lab rats that they think we are.
6/5/01: Anonymous says: I understand there is a debate within Microsoft itself about this decision. However it has come from 'On High' and the people at the higher levels of any corporation are basically cowards who dare not admit they were wrong for fear of 'Losing Face' and credibility with their peers who reside with them in their Ivory Towers what happens in the real world is beyond their comprehension.
