5/31/06: Bobby from GUILDFORD says: How on earth can I complete my CCIE now? My IDS runs v4.x, no upgrade path as it is from ebay. My 2x pix 501 cannot do v7.x (not possible to upgrade) no way can I afford to add 2x ASA-5510 to my lab Seems to me that Cisco only want saervice provider funded candidates to achieve CCIE
5/31/06: Gordon from Culemborg, The Netherlands says: Uhm....you still got about 6 months to complete your mission... go for it! And good luck, stay positive...!
5/31/06: adam from Newcastle says: Yer I am in the same boat. Just bought a 501. (who can afford 3550's for a lab anyway).
6/1/06: TL says: Search online for lab rack rentals. Chances are they will be all over the changes, otherwise they won't get new customers...
6/2/06: Anoymous CCIE says: It's been my experience that 90% of a Lab can be done on older equipment. The lab doesn't just test the latest stuff, it also tests features that have been around for a while. If it was me, I would use my existing equipment for 90% of my studying, and then use a Rack Rental provider for the remaining 10%. If rack time is cheaper than buying it on ebay (for example, the 3550s. You can buy 30-60 days of rack rental for the cost of a single 3550 on ebay). Do the rack rental.
6/3/06: Jitendra from India says: No i don't think so cisco would introduce cisco ASA boxes for coverage of just 10%.If u can see the updated lab blueprint R&S is no more in the lab.So coverage of security tough will be very very high. One will have to work in and out on these equipments.Cisco is trying hard to market its ASA boxes. So definately they will play a major role.U can expect pix failover labs also in the CCIE lab now.
6/5/06: Vivek from India says: The new blueprint is really tough ! ASA, PIX 7x , IPS plus NAC. PHEW !! Jitendra is right. They have removed R&S. So security content will be more.
6/6/06: Rmaloney from USA says: Cisco will has or should have the new 5505 which is the ASA replacement for the 501 and 506. It has the same functionality as the 5510 but less throughput. Good luck.
6/7/06: 2006CCIESec from USA says: Having passed the Security lab recently, let me throw in my 2c: You can have ten working years of experiences and still failed the lab. The lab is not difficult but it is very tricky. The problem with the security lab is that you can have everything working and still fail because your solution is not consistent with Cisco requirements. Even when you managed pass the security lab on subsequent attempts, you still don't know how you passed because the difference between passing and failing is not very clear. The security lab at this point does have some R&S elements in there. I never attempt the R&S lab so I can not comment on the difficulty of it but I can tell you that the R&S portions on the Security lab is very advanced. Most people that I know who passed the security lab are also R&S certified but not always. If you take the lab before 2007, just be aware that the R&S portions in the Security lab is very advanced. It is actually harder than the R&S lab, in my opinion. I would recommend that everyone use rack rental instead of purchasing your own equipments. The equipments are very expensive. I spent about 8k on rack rental. You have to follow cisco blueprint. Using older equipments is not an option because a lot of new features are not available on older equipments and Cisco will test you on the new features. When you have only 8 hours in the lab and you're pressed for time, it is not a wise idea to test some new commands or new options for the first time. Last but not least, in the real lab, if you can finish the lab around 1pm and then go back and re-check your work, you will have a really good chance of passing the lab. Another thing, if you leave the lab with a feeling "that was fun", expect your CCIE Security number the next day. Good luck to everyone. With hard work, you will definitely make it, even if it takes several attempts as it did with me.
6/7/06: IR from [email protected] says: Do you think that 4 months of hardcore rack-time could be enough for getting the lab?
