CORRECTION: Don Field's title was incorrect when we first published the article. His correct title is director of certifications, as shown above. CertCities.com apologizes for this error. |

TCPmag: That is great news for Cisco and the diligent students who worked hard to get certified. I do think there is a problem with post certification. I have - had three Cisco certifications (CCNP, CCNA, CCDA). I let them expire and did attempt to get them recertified per Cisco requirements. I am still doing network administration and design and I also have a PMP and have started work on my CISSP. Cisco should consider continuing education like the PMP. I understand they want to maintain the value of the certification but Cisco keeps you on a treadmill that is quite fatiguing if you want a life and try to keep certified. |

I actually appreciate the rigor of the post cerification isssues. It separates cisco from the rest of the certification machines and designates a distinction of quality about its product. |

Victor Robinson is correct - keeping up with the "newest" trends leaves very little time for a REAL life with my wife and kids. It is really good that we are not all the MCSE's and CompTIA people (I hold those as well) but the paper does not mean you know it unless you are tested to the extremes and the test should be valid longer due to the depth & skills needed to pass a Cisco Cert Test (CCT) ... |

Correct me if I am wrong but Robinson's suggestion of continuing education is accomplished by the fact you have to re-certify every three years on the new technology. This would require you to do some type of continuing education to pass those exams. I am sorry that you find the treadmill fatiguing to keep your certs but if you want to stay current then you must stay up on the technology. |

Don't forget that it's a prerequisite for Sales Staff at Cisco Certified Resellers. Tough to pass the exams but you learn the product and business drivers exceptionally well. Go Cisco! Sorts out the men from the boys. |

Cisco and Cisco Test takers: What I am saying is Cisco should consider another way to keep your certifications. The whole employment environment in North America has changed since I first started working with Cisco routers & switches in 1995. Certification was different when you just did deployment, support and design. With the contraction in the job market in late 2000 - 2001 (most of us) I have been task to be a Manager, network support, project manager and now HazMat Technician with networking / data center knowledge. I enjoyed the challenge to get certified but it is quite taxing to me and some of my peers here at BellSouth to continue to keep certified. You are to balance life and work and Cisco is not working to offer continuing education or online lectures that would allow you to test incrementally to keep your certification. To take the same stance that you have to put the same effort in study as if you have never studied Cisco technology before is not that path for me. I can not speak for others but to learn the other task, other evolving technologies at work makes the Cisco certification process to hard. Again the PMP certification allows you many different modes to continue your certification. I am not devaluing the Cisco certification but Cisco needs to consider all of us are not solely doing just Cisco at work. We are usually the self-starters at work and are task to do more than just Cisco at work and we need to have a life. 1) Test for those that want to take them 2) Online seminars that you can attend to earn credits towards maintaining certification. 3) Other suggestions Again I understand we need to represent ourselves and Cisco when we attain certification. The certification process Cisco has challenges you to know the information so it is not a hollow certification. But how much of what we are tested on in the Cisco exam do we all really use at work. |
