CWNP To Launch Entry-Level Wireless Cert

10/5/2005 -- This week Planet3Wireless' Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP) certification program announced a new entry-level credential for wireless networking: Wireless#.

Pronounced Wireless Sharp, new title will test candidate's foundation-level knowledge of five wireless networking technologies: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WiMax, ZigBee and Infrared.

"What we have created in Wireless# is an entry level IT certification that tests knowledge of a broader range of wireless technologies,” said Kevin Sandlin, president of Planet3Wireless.

The title's one exam (PW0-050) will be available in beta format on or around October 24 for the discounted price of $85 (U.S.), Sandlin said. Objectives for the exam can be found here.

The final exam will launch sometime in January with a price point between $120 and $160 (U.S.) -- less than the program's other exams, which currently cost $175 (U.S).

According to Sandlin, the name Wireless# was chosen to help designate the certification as an entry-level title, much like how the Computing Technology Industry Association uses plus signs behind the names of its entry-level certifications, like A+ and Network+.

In fact CompTIA almost launched an entry-level wireless certification, Wireless +, back in 2002, but cancelled the project a few months after announcing it, citing a lack of standards within wireless technologies.

But the timing is now right for an entry-level wireless certification, Sandlin said. "[In] 2002, Bluetooth was still a promise, WiMax was a dream and no one had heard of ZigBee," he explained. "Now, all three have solidified their place in the market."

10/5/05: Anonymous says: I believe that Wireless# is targeted for the test taker formally known as $.
10/6/05: IT Pro says: The name is not that good. It should be CWNT (Certified Wireless Network Technician)
10/6/05: Anonymous says: Looks to me just another nameless cert to make the maker some extra money that no company would care if they had it or not.
10/6/05: Anonymous says: IT Pro, it can't even qualify to be named something that good. Maybe something like CWNW (certified wireless network wannabesomething)
10/8/05: Anonymous from Australia says: Judging from the scope of the certification from the cwnp.com site - it looks like it will mainly benefit tech support consultants on helpdesks and local computer stores that support home wireless products etc.
10/9/05: Anonymous says: At first glance I actually thought it was a typo, guess I was wrong. You have got to wonder how many people approved it before the name hit the street. Maybe they were trying to make it sound so stupid that everyone would talk about it and go out and get it. I would not even mention it on a resume if I had it.
11/4/05: George from cyprus says: stop complaining you dont want it dont get it! I want it no matter the name! 20 years ago if i said here is an MCSE its just started you would laugh!
12/30/06: james from dallas says: Is wireless never going to be a good cert and JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111
