Microsoft Offering 20 Percent Discount on MCDST Exams Worldwide

2/25/2004 -- Microsoft recently announced a promotion offering a 20 percent discount on the exams for its new Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) certification. The 20-percent discount applies worldwide, but only at participating Prometric and Pearson Vue testing centers.

The MCDST exams -- 70-271: Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP Operating System and 70-272: Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Windows XP Operating System -- each retail for $125 (U.S.).. During the promotion, Microsoft is discounting the exams to $100. (Regional, non-U.S. pricing will reflect a similar 20-percent discount.) Candidates must complete exams by August 31, 2004.

To apply for the discount, candidates must use the code MDSTEX when registering.

For candidates in the U.S. who need training, Microsoft is extending the 20 percent discount to the following Microsoft Official Curriculum courses:

  • Course 2261: Supporting Users Running the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System (three-day, instructor-led course)
  • Course 2262: Supporting Users Running Applications on a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System (two days, instructor-led)

The 20 percent discount appears to be availalble only at U.S.-based CTECs. Courses must be completed by June 28, 2004.

2/26/04: mrobinson52 from Florida says: I would suspect that this cert is not getting the attention that Microsoft thought that it would, and so they are attempting to make it more appealing by giving a discount. When they first announced it, I thought that it was a great idea, but the problem is that it covers only Windows XP, whereas the true Desktop Support Tech has to work with all desktop operating systems back to Windows 95. And the fact that it is two tests makes it a little less attractive than simply taking the one test to become an MCP in Windows XP. They need to show the real value that this cert has, and to do that, they need to create a demand for it from employers.
2/27/04: Anonymous says: Comptia A+ covers not only the software but the hardware components as well. No need for this Microsoft cert, they were just trying to squeeze out a little extra $$$$$ on the way to getting MCSE.
2/27/04: Anonymous says: I think Microsoft has a good idea with this new cert, but they should think about either making it one exam for the title, or if its to stay as two exams, the second should cover other OS besides XP.
2/27/04: rflemen says: mrrobinson52: I don't buy the arguement that the cert isn't doing well and that is why they are doing this. The cert has been in non-beta live status for a month...(not even, 272 went live in early Feb) I just think they are promoting a new cert and trying to give people more of a reason to take it if they were on the fence.
2/27/04: rflemen says: Anonymous: How are they squeezing more money on the way to an MCSE...neither of these exams count towards the MCSE. If you want to be an MCSE just take the required exams. The cert is worthless if your already an MCSE, so exactly what is your point?
2/27/04: rflemen says: To 2nd anonymous: The only other OS this cert should include is Windows 2000 and Windows NT, which actually quite a few questions require you to know how these OS's work to answer them right. Microsoft no longer supports 95 and is ending support for 98 shortly...why should they test on technology they no longer support?
2/29/04: Anonymous says: To rflemen: mo' money
3/1/04: rflemen says: Actually lees money...about 20%...
3/1/04: rflemen says: less not lees...sorry too early in the morning...
3/4/04: rflemen says: Just an FYI, the MCDST cert DOES count towards the elective requirement for the MCSA see: http://www.fireflyfans.net/news.asp?newsid=473
