Self Test Owner Buys Transcender for $10 Million

1/7/2004 -- Kaplan Education, owner of practice-exam provider Self Test Software, recently announced it has acquired the assets rival exam provider, Nashville, Tenn.-based Transcender.

Kaplan paid $10 million to Stamford, Conn.-based Information Holdings for the assets.

Self Test and Transcender, both founded in 1992, are widely viewed as the number two and number one providers of IT certification practice exams, respectively. Self Test was acquired by Kaplan in 1999.

Self Test President Chip Schuneman told CertCities.com the intent at this point is for both product lines to remain intact. "Both companies have established really strong brands, whether it's vendor-endorsed products with Self Test or just the high quality Transcender exams," he explained. "We're going through a period of discovering what's made Transcender such a great brand in order retain its strong value in the future."

One issue still being worked out is how Transcender's independently produced practice exams can coexist with Self Test's official exam provider status. Schuneman said that the company is talking to partners like Microsoft and Oracle on how this might work. 'The response [to the acquisition] has been warm," he stated. "They have questions just like you have, and we just have to work those out."

Schuneman also said he didn't know at this time whether the acquisition would result in layoffs, but he did say, " There's some incredibly talented people here. When buying assets, [people are] the most valuable asset you're purchasing."

"As a leader in educational services...Kaplan is just a natural and perfect home for Transcender," he continued."We didn't pay 10 million to disable the company, we did it to enable the company, and the combination of the number one and two providers...can only benefit IT professionals going forward."

Schuneman stressed that it is "business as usual" for customers of both products line, stating that both continue to be available and all guarantees are and will continue to be honored.

Kaplan Education is a division of Kaplan Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company.

1/16/04: TranscenderMichael from Nashville, TN says: As one of the Content Developers at Transcender, I would like to personally give my thanks to those of you who have supported and will continue to support Transcender. You are correct - the money that is paid for the products does go to certified, college-educated individuals who make the effort to create quality exam preparation materials. And it's true what they say: "You get what you pay for". I pride myself on the technical quality that goes into the questions I create. In my opinion, our explanations set us apart from the competition. The explanations will help you to not only know why the right answer is right, but also why the wrong answers are wrong (and sometimes, in what situations would the "wrong answers" be considered correct). In this way, we feel that helps you to not only be prepared to pass the exam, but also to be a well-prepared tech in the "real world"... one who can answer more than the 50-or-so questions found on the exam. I hope that I have helped some of you through my past efforts, and I will continue to attempt to do so. Thanks again for allowing me to help you with your careers. Without your support, we wouldn't exist. TranscenderMichael MCSE+I, CCNP, CCDP, CNE, OCA, Linux+, A+, CCSA
1/16/04: TO: TranscenderMichael says: I hope Transcender continues to develop high-quality material like always. I have yet to fail a single test when using your content. CCNP, CISSP, SCSA, SCNA, TSM (Tivoli), CompTIA crap:)
1/16/04: TranscenderMichael from Nashville, TN says: I'm highly optimistic that the quality will remain as high as it ever has (and I'll make sure of it if I'm the one working on it!). ;) Kaplan's a great company - I'm very impressed. I'm sure that Kaplan will know how to combine SelfTest and Transcender for the benefit of everyone involved - for the company as well as the customers. Thanks for the vote of confidence and for the praise. We greatly appreciate it. --TM
1/17/04: Anonymous says: Yes keep improving the already excellent quality but please do less on the password thing so the crack will be written faster. But anyway, so far so good, it's been great, thanks much.
2/6/04: Joe says: Since Trancesender has been bought out, they raised prices... lame.
