Self Test Owner Buys Transcender for $10 Million

1/7/2004 -- Kaplan Education, owner of practice-exam provider Self Test Software, recently announced it has acquired the assets rival exam provider, Nashville, Tenn.-based Transcender.

Kaplan paid $10 million to Stamford, Conn.-based Information Holdings for the assets.

Self Test and Transcender, both founded in 1992, are widely viewed as the number two and number one providers of IT certification practice exams, respectively. Self Test was acquired by Kaplan in 1999.

Self Test President Chip Schuneman told CertCities.com the intent at this point is for both product lines to remain intact. "Both companies have established really strong brands, whether it's vendor-endorsed products with Self Test or just the high quality Transcender exams," he explained. "We're going through a period of discovering what's made Transcender such a great brand in order retain its strong value in the future."

One issue still being worked out is how Transcender's independently produced practice exams can coexist with Self Test's official exam provider status. Schuneman said that the company is talking to partners like Microsoft and Oracle on how this might work. 'The response [to the acquisition] has been warm," he stated. "They have questions just like you have, and we just have to work those out."

Schuneman also said he didn't know at this time whether the acquisition would result in layoffs, but he did say, " There's some incredibly talented people here. When buying assets, [people are] the most valuable asset you're purchasing."

"As a leader in educational services...Kaplan is just a natural and perfect home for Transcender," he continued."We didn't pay 10 million to disable the company, we did it to enable the company, and the combination of the number one and two providers...can only benefit IT professionals going forward."

Schuneman stressed that it is "business as usual" for customers of both products line, stating that both continue to be available and all guarantees are and will continue to be honored.

Kaplan Education is a division of Kaplan Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company.

1/7/04: Smoky McPot says: Still available on Kazaa regardless of who owns them.

1/7/04: mrobinson52 from Florida says: I have some friends who work at Transcender, and I have long maintained that Transcender is the Cadillac of the test prep line. I surely hope that continues, and that my freinds are not outsourced to get a cheaper product. I also would not call STS the number two test prep, I believe that honor goes to MeasureUp. The good news is that STS is an honorable name and not a braindumper trying to look legit. I hope that there are no changes to Transcender, unless it is to bring Spike back as the spokesman!
1/7/04: Anonymous says: Long live Kazaa and any other P2P, FTP, messenger software so that I can download any ebooks, CBT, simulators, dumps, and any other expensive-as-hell software for IT certs, for less than FREE, regardless of who owns them, correct. Thanks to cable modem too. I so far just had to pay for the exam fees. Priceless...
1/7/04: George J says: It is a good news though it will be very complex and confusing state for the customers before everything is settled out. I guess now is the turn for next tier companies especially MeasureUp, Whizlabs and Boson for such news. This merger will give both STS and Tran from the tough competition posed by the above companies. Best part is: Customer (like me) will be the winner ;)
1/8/04: MFred from Florida says: The thing that makes Transcender worth the money for me is that their exams are terrific learning tools as well as exam-prep tools. They have been very responsive to criticism and suggestions for improvement, and IMHO are way ahead of whoever is number 2.
1/8/04: Mikey from Life Cereal Commercials says: The most interesting thing of all does not appear in this article - the fact that Transcender sold about three years ago for $60 million. The fact that they have gone from a value of $60m to $10m in such a short period of time serves as a metaphor to what has happened to the value of computer certification overall.
1/8/04: SS from Chicago says: Agree with Mikey from Life Cereal. My first thoughts are is Transcender only worth $10m? Really? I had thought there product and brands are bigger than that. I guess in the article, they're buying the people. I wonder if their ASSets are worth $10m. We'll find out.
1/8/04: Brock Lesnar CCNA MCSE A Plus from Network Systems Engineer says: To the freeloader who downloads from Kazaa. It's no longer there. You can't get free download for the current Cisco, Comptia, Oracle, Checkpoint or Microsoft MCSE 2003 exams. There is like a authorization key to activate the test software. So start paying for them. Any way to get the Transcender cheaper than their listed overpriced download is to buy them at the getcertified4less. test voucher and Trancender dowload for about $159 $169 189 price. I bought it last year and it cost about $35 to 45 per Transcender exams.
1/8/04: To Freeload McPoop from Big Show Spike Batista says: You can't do it McPoop. It's not there. It was only for the MCSE 2000 exams and I searched for cracks that don't even work for the demo. You just blowing off smoke like your lame brain.
