Microsoft Learning Addresses Offshore Rumor

9/17/2003 -- In an interview with CertCities.com today, Dan Truax, director of Microsoft Certification Business & Product Strategy, addressed a rumor published in InfoWorld's "Notes from the Field" column last week that Microsoft Learning had laid of 30 content producers with plans to move its content development overseas, “possibly to India.”

In a statement issued to CertCities.com yesterday, Microsoft said that the layoffs -- which were made in conjuction with the formation of the new Microsoft Learning group -- affected a number of job types, and actually resulted in a higher employee to management ratio. "This flatter organization exists to empower employees to make decisions and service customers," it read.

In the interview today, Truax confirmed this statement and commented further on the issues raised in the column.

“There are two things that are being mixed and taken out of context [in the InfoWorld article]," he commented.

"One of the reasons that drove [the creation of Microsoft Learning] is that there was a lot of duplication of content, duplication of sales...so it was really important to us to be able to remove that duplication," he stated.

"We have always and continue to have some of the content creation done by partners, and we continue to invest in our partnerships..to create unique custom content," he explained. "With our partner model, [the] primary purpose for [overseas content creation] would be for them to customize to local market to meet international needs, and not our purpose to have content developed to meet our U.S. needs."

He said that such development is not unusual for a world-wide learning provider like Microsoft. "As a global company, if we don't do a good job serving our customers' needs and they're asking for localized content...it's my job to make sure that we’re meeting all of our customers' needs." -Becky Nagel

9/22/03: Anonymous says: I am an Indian and I am frankly embarrassed by "anand" (if that is indeed his real name and if he is indeed an Indian). I hope all of you dont brand the entire Indian community and nation as being selfish and arrogant. I live and work in the US (have been for more than 10 years). This is my home and many of my Indian friends also have had to face layoffs because of the Indians in India taking away these jobs by lower wages. So, its not just the Americans that suffer but ALL the residents in the US. Having said that, it seems a sad, but inevitable truth, in this era of globalization. Every country manages to protect some sectors (like agriculture and, more recently, steel) but many industries and the workload is still up for grabs - especially in a tight economy (isnt this ironic?) May I make a fervant plea to please debate this issue WITHOUT personalities and mud slinging against nations or people. Eventually, there is a human face to all of us (India, American or otherwise). Lets be civil. PLEASE.
9/22/03: Alex from Houston TX says: So... Microsoft is exporting even more jobs to India? I think Linux might be the way to go.
9/23/03: Pure Bread Americanna says: Anand, you really are a piece of work. You make the same types of excuses and cries that the Al Queda do. You act as though America is the reason the rest of the world sucks. Have you, or any other Arab of your mindset, ever set foot in America? Stop blaming us for your problems. The average American has put in 18 hour days before. The average American does know what's it like to stress over whether to pay certain bills each month or to simply find something to eat. Yes, we are pissed off that our jobs are being sent to you guys because you guys don't deserve them. You aren't the ones buying the goods and you sure as hell aren't the ones who produced this stuff to begin with. So, why don't you get a grip on what's really going on and realize that the American workers are much better people than you can imagine.
9/23/03: Mujib says: I am thinking amrikans deserve these troubles. you kill peoples for oil. see how many amerikans killed in iraq. it is going to be more bad in future. leave iraq and say sorry to world and un and be more humble
9/23/03: Anonymous says: The only post I could find that seems to be from a sane, rational individual is from Anonymous (9/22/03). He seems to be typical of the Indians I work with in San Jose (kind, not overly political zealots and hardworking). I would agree with him(her?) on how atypical "anand" is to the average Indian and on his balanced comments.
9/24/03: testy now are we says: "Pure Bread Americanna": I'm Canadian and I too hear and agree with what you are saying. America is not the only country losing jobs to the east. I feel that the governments from both of our countries need to step in and protect what is rightfully ours. That is our way of life. If the people of the east do not understand our way of life, then let them live in their own disturbed world.
9/24/03: Anonymous says: TO Pure "Bread" Americanna: First learn to talk and communicate properly - its BRED and not BREAD, you ignorant moron. No wonder you, and your even more ignorant president, are dragging your country down. REMAINEDER OF POST REMOVED.
9/25/03: To Anonymous 9-24 says: Ok, good point, if you're going to bash others at least use the correct grammar. Now, as for our ignorant president, I really agree on this one. He claims he's a Christian man. How in God's name can he allow his people to suffer while their livelihoods are being stripped away by big businesses. I find it ironic that Bush (can't really bring myself to call him president) can swear up and down about save the average 4 person family in America $2000 a year yet he's allowing this same families main source of income drop from, on average, $50,000 a year to nothing because of outsourcing. I understand economics and cost saving but that doesn't fly. We, Americans-Canadians-Australians-Europeans were the ones that created these large companies and their stockpiles of wealth. It is only right and just to expect, no, demand that they keep that money within our borders. Sorry India, Russia, China but we really don't care to share. The reason why is simple. One day we help you, the next day you try to destroy us. I would hope as an American tax payer, that little ol' GW would finally catch on to reality.
9/25/03: PROOF READ PEOPLE says: PLEASE---but all and all, good points above:)
9/25/03: Anonymous says: Although, I bet the left is happy about jobs going oveseas...it increases their demographic. The more people who rely on government assistance, the better off they are.
