Microsoft Learning Addresses Offshore Rumor

9/17/2003 -- In an interview with CertCities.com today, Dan Truax, director of Microsoft Certification Business & Product Strategy, addressed a rumor published in InfoWorld's "Notes from the Field" column last week that Microsoft Learning had laid of 30 content producers with plans to move its content development overseas, “possibly to India.”

In a statement issued to CertCities.com yesterday, Microsoft said that the layoffs -- which were made in conjuction with the formation of the new Microsoft Learning group -- affected a number of job types, and actually resulted in a higher employee to management ratio. "This flatter organization exists to empower employees to make decisions and service customers," it read.

In the interview today, Truax confirmed this statement and commented further on the issues raised in the column.

“There are two things that are being mixed and taken out of context [in the InfoWorld article]," he commented.

"One of the reasons that drove [the creation of Microsoft Learning] is that there was a lot of duplication of content, duplication of sales...so it was really important to us to be able to remove that duplication," he stated.

"We have always and continue to have some of the content creation done by partners, and we continue to invest in our partnerships..to create unique custom content," he explained. "With our partner model, [the] primary purpose for [overseas content creation] would be for them to customize to local market to meet international needs, and not our purpose to have content developed to meet our U.S. needs."

He said that such development is not unusual for a world-wide learning provider like Microsoft. "As a global company, if we don't do a good job serving our customers' needs and they're asking for localized content...it's my job to make sure that we’re meeting all of our customers' needs." -Becky Nagel

9/18/03: Captain America says: I like how Truax just evaded the whole issue of exporting jobs to India. This is the scary and unfortunate trend in IT today. Kodak is about to do the same thing! It's time to fight back and organize lobby groups to keep our jobs from being shipped to other nations. The US created the internet and has revolutionized the application of computer technology as we know it today. This is OUR industry....lets keep it that way!
9/18/03: Put your money where your mouth is says: Ok Captain America, how do we go about forming a lobby group in IT. Yes, in IT, where everyone is out for themselves in the first place. That's our biggest problem, I don't give a da-- about you and you really don't give a da-- about me. We're no better than the guys at the top, we want the $$$$$$$ and a stable career.
9/18/03: hehe says: mo money
9/18/03: America First from USA, USA!!! says: For lobby groups. check out: - www.washtech.org - www.techsunite.org - www.ieeeusa.org
9/18/03: Put your money where your mouth is says: "America First from USA" -- there you go, right on! Thanks!
9/18/03: America First from USA, USA!!! says: If Microsoft wants to DISS American IT people, maybe we should get certified in Linux and Java, instead of MCSE and MCSD!
9/18/03: Could someone provide me facts says: I hear a lot about the outsourcing problem. Does anyone have some concrete sites or facts about the numbers; and, the actual IT positions that are being outsourced. Thanks. Concerned American.
9/18/03: Do you get the sense says: That Bill Gates is sitting in his office laughing his butt off every minute of every day. Think about it, that little geek pirated Windows and made a fortune. He then got everyone's hopes up after he made his $$$$$$$$$. Now, that American business has grown reliant on Micorosoft, he pulls the rug and ships all the jobs to India. Here's an idea, if you can get at him or other big wigs in the industry, why not attack him in other ways--won't go into to much detail, but they can't enjoy their riches if they're not here:)!
9/18/03: Defense IT says: WHOA!!! "Do you get the sense" you're a little off-center there bud. Holy smokes! I agree with joining together to do something, but use the togetherness as a voice to confront congress.
9/18/03: Anonymous says: Hi guys actually someone was suprised by my previous reply. Actually we indians dont hate americans but their double standard policies and their heartless and selfish rulers and businessmen for whom money stands first. And reg. the wages i am still a student. Anyway an IT professional having an ordinary job may earn 15000RS (1rs is equal to 49$) . Someone said that we should be looking for linux certifications and java certifications. I am sorry to tell you that professionals over here are well versed in java and linux is really catching up. Even i have a linux os installed. So this is what divides you people from indians and asians in general you wait for something to happen so that you can change(laziness) but we over here are prepared for anything and everything. And reg. captain americas statement that IT is americas industry i would just like to tell onething in IT it is never I it is WE. If you say I you will fall down to the ditch even faster. And one morething if only americans had been involved in the IT industry the industry would have been doomed long ago. See any credit info in any software and you will know the real heroes. Try to accept the fact. Americans have the money but they are too lazy and indians(asians) have less money and work verrrrrrrrry hard. There is no use in us professionals fighting we should see to that we all extract the max from the corp.
