CORRECTED: (ISC)2 Launches Associate Program

6/23/2003 -- On Friday, Vienna, Va.- based International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium [(ISC)2] announced a new Associate program that allows candidates without the requisite security background to become official Associates of the organization while pursuing the organization's Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) titles.

Candidates still must have the required experience levels to become CISSPs or SSCPs (four years and one year, respectively). However, with the new program, those who pass the exam(s) without the requisite experience will now become a Associates of (ISC)2. While they won't be able to use the titles of CISSP or SSCP until the experience requirements are met, they will be able to access benefits of (ISC)2, such as a member-only forum, while gaining that experience.

"The Associate program is designed to accelerate the professional growth of practitioners worldwide by encouraging individuals entering the field to…pass a rigorous exam and subscribe to (ISC)2's code of ethics as early as possible in their careers," James E Duffy, CISSP and executive director of (ISC)2, explained in a written statement. "The program is ideal for those accumulating their first experience in the field and for students looking for a future career in our profession."

"The Associate program is part of (ISC)2's commitment to serving the need of the information security professional throughout the career path of their choice," he continued.

Corrected 6/24/03: Previously, this story stated that Associates could use the title CISSP Associate or SSCP Associate. This was not correct. Associates are only allowed to use the moniker of Associate of (ISC)2; using the CISSP or SSCP moniker in any way before completing the entire certification process is forbidden. CertCities.com apologies for this error.

6/27/03: Anonymous says: Hi, can you specify what kind of certification exam that you've taken & passed without knowing about the subject ??? eg. Microsoft, Cisco, Linux, A+/Network+, Oracle, & etc... ??? So that others may learn from you...
6/28/03: Anonymous says: Are you kidding??? Of course everything, any IT exam that you can think of, even my friend passed CCIE written and lab the same way.
6/29/03: Anonymous says: If a person able to passed the hottest certification currently, in this case, CCIE, I assumed this person must have put in a lot of effort for preparation work, if not, he/she must be an experience person in IT field for years...So you must be kidding ??? if this person without knowing about the subject well...& this may consider as an insult to Cisco...I hope Cisco able to hear/read this...By the way, I asking you yourself, what kind of certification you're holding now in details, again...??!! Not your friend or someone else...hey...OR maybe you are just kidding with all of us...??? if this is the case, then is completely fine with me, but I do not know those IT expert, CCIE holdres out there...
7/1/03: Anonymous says: Oh I know such story...that happens, I know...I think it's true...
7/2/03: Anonymous says: I sure hope that the IT industry gets off this certification frenzy and starts looking again at relevant work history and business contribution. Formal education (yes, a real college degree) and experience are what matter. Think about the pilot next time you get on an airplane. Think about the electrician you hire and the apprentice time he or she had to complete before licensure.
9/8/03: Anonymous says: What's the purpose of the Associate cert. anyway? If you can't be a CISSP, why bother? Might as well get the cheaper CompTIA Security...
